Sur la base d'une dramatisation caricaturale, la guerre sévirait partout en Afrique. Grand corps mou et fantasque, le continent, impuissant, serait engagé dans un processus d'autodestruction ravageante. L'action humaine, stupide et folle, y suivrait presque toujours autre chose qu'un calcul rationnel. Cannibalisme, pandémies et pestilence partout imposeraient leur loi. Non point que de détresse, il n'y en ait point. D'horribles mouvements, des lois qui fondent et ordonnent la tragédie et le génocide, des dieux qui se présentent sous le visage de la mort et de la destitution, des cadavres errant au gré des flots, des menaces de toutes sortes, des ondes aveugles, des forces terribles qui, tous les jours, arrachent les êtres humains, les animaux, les plantes et les choses à leur sphère de vie et les condamnent à mort : il y en a, en effet. Ce qui fait cependant défaut, loin des culs-de-sac, des constats à l'aveuglette et des faux dilemmes (afropessimisme contre afrocentrisme), c'est la radicalité du questionnement. Car ce que l'Afrique en tant que notion met en crise, c'est la façon dont la théorie sociale a, jusqu'à présent, pensé le problème du basculement des mondes, de leurs oscillations et de leurs tremblements, de leurs retournements et de leurs déguisements. C'est aussi la façon dont cette théorie a échoué à rendre compte du temps vécu dans sa multiplicité et ses simultanéités, sa volatilité, sa présence et ses latences, au-delà des catégories paresseuses du permanent et du changeant qu'affectionnent tant d'historiens.

Le Professeur Komla Messan Nubukpo, à qui cet ouvrage est consacré, a eu un parcours exceptionnel. Chef du département d'anglais puis Doyen de la faculté des Lettres et Sciences humaines de l'Université de Lomé, il a été élevé au rang de Doyen honoraire de la même faculté. Il a été Ministre de l'Enseignement Supérieur et de la Recherche. A cheval entre les études américaines et africaines, le Professeur Nubukpo a investi les aires de recherche dans le Post-modernism et le New Criticism. En littérature africaine, ses travaux portent essentiellement sur l'outil critique Womanism, théorisé par Alice Walker et, dans les Humanités africaines, il a énormément contribué aux études postcoloniales et l'attachement aux droits humains. Le Professeur Nubukpo, une référence en étude anglophone au Togo, est le modèle de l'enseignant émérite et du chercheur multidimensionnel. Sa contribution intellectuelle ne peut donc s'appréhender sans référence aux nombreuses influences qui l'ont installé au confluent de diverses disciplines, cultures et langues.

With more than two thousand languages spread over its territory, multilingualism is a common reality in Africa. The main official languages of most African countries are Indo-European, in many instances Romance. As they were primarily brought to Africa in the era of colonization, the areas discussed in this volume are thirty-five states that were once ruled by Belgium, France, Italy, Portugal, or Spain, and the African regions still belonging to three of them. Twenty-six states are presented in relation to French, four to Italian, six to Portuguese, and two to Spanish. They are considered in separate chapters according to their sociolinguistic situation, linguistic history, external language policy, linguistic characteristics, and internal language policy. The result is a comprehensive overview of the Romance languages in modern-day Africa. It follows a coherent structure, offers linguistic and sociolinguistic information, and illustrates language contact situations, power relations, as well as the cross-fertilization and mutual enrichment emerging from the interplay of languages and cultures in Africa.

Locating the aesthetic within a range of critical fields - the rupturing of narrative spectacle and violence by montage, the archives of the everyday in the 'afropolis', the plurivocal mysteries of sound and language, male intimacy and desire, the borderzones of migration and transcultural drift - this study reveals the possibility for new, non-conceptual kinds of beauty in African cinema: abstract, material, migrant, erotic, convulsive, queer.
