Explore the riches at the intersection of Anglican and philosophical theology. In this thought-provoking essay collection, Robert MacSwain explores important connections between Anglican and philosophical theology. Shining a spotlight on the underappreciated theological work of Austin Farrer and David Brown, he brings them into creative conversation with better-known figures such as Joseph Butler, C. S. Lewis, Stanley Hauerwas, and Eleonore Stump. He skillfully leads readers through diverse conceptual territory ranging from the Reformed epistemology of Alvin Plantinga and Nicholas Wolterstorff, to the hiddenness argument of J. L. Schellenberg, to a sacramental vision of human culture and the arts. More broadly, MacSwain outlines what he calls “Critical Catholicism,” explaining how it differs from other movements in contemporary Christian thought such as Radical Orthodoxy and Analytic Theology. These perceptive essays will be of particular interest to scholars and pastors who are curious about connections between theology, philosophy, and Anglican studies.

For at least the past two decades, international Anglicanism has been gripped by a crisis of identity: what is to be the dynamic between autonomy and interdependence? Where is authority to be located? How might the local relate to the international? How are the variously diverse national churches to be held together ‘in communion’? "A Still More Excellent Way" presents a comprehensive account of the development and nature of metropolitical authority and the place of the ‘province’ within Anglican polity, with an emphasis on the contemporary question of how international Anglicanism is to be imagined and take shape. The first comprehensive historical examination of the development of metropolitical authority and provincial polity within international Anglicanism, the book offers hope to those wearied by the deadlock and frustration around questions of authority which have dogged Anglicanism.

Anglicanism world-wide faces huge problems in the post-Empire era. Churches that were originally founded as colonial and missionary outposts by Great Britain and the United States have now become autonomous Anglican provinces; and what used to be a predominantly white, Anglo-Saxon group of churches in the northern hemisphere has become a truly global community, most of whose members live in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Pacific. Using the experience of the Anglican Church in Australia, Bruce Kaye tracks the modern story of Australian Anglicanism and reconsiders key elements of the New Testament, the English Reformation, and the ongoing theological tradition that relate to this story.

An Analysis Of T S Eliot S The Sacred Wood written by Rachel Teubner and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-05 with Literary Criticism categories.

The essay for which The Sacred Wood is primarily remembered is one of the most famous pieces of criticism in English: “Tradition and the Individual Talent” helped to re-orientate arguments about the study of literature and its production by redefining the nature of tradition and the artist's relation to it.At a time when the word “traditional” had become a way of damning with faint praise by reference to the past, Eliot reinterpreted the term to mean something entirely different. It is not, he argues, something just “handed down,” but, instead, a prize to be obtained “by great labour,” not least in the making of a huge effort of understanding how the past fits together. Seen thus, Eliot suggests, a literary and artistic tradition “has a simultaneous existence and composes a simultaneous order” – and it is not just past, but present as well. For Eliot, “art never improves,” but only changes, and each part of the tradition is constantly being reinterpreted in light of what is added to the whole. The role of the poet, in Eliot's view, is to subjugate their own personality, and become “a receptacle,” in which “numberless feelings, phrases, images... can unite to form a new compound.” Redefining the issue of poets' relations to the past in this new way is a fine example of creative thinking, and Eliot’s ability to connect existing concepts in new ways was what gave weight to the argument that he advanced: that poets cannot succeed without understanding that they are taking their place on a continuum that stretches back to all their predecessors, and incorporate the ideas, strengths and failings of the entire body of work that those poets represented.
