A new collection of prophetic essays from one of the sharpest practitioners of the form Mark Slouka writes from a particular vantage point, one invoked by Thoreau, who wished "to improve the nick of time . . . to stand on the meeting of two eternities, the past and future." At this bewildering convergence, Slouka asks us to consider what it means to be human and what we must revive, or reject, in order to retain our humanity in the modern world. Collected over fifteen years, these essays include fascinating explorations of the relationship between memory and history and the nature of "tragedy" in a media-driven culture; meditations on the transcendent "wisdom" of the natural world and the role of silence in an age of noise; and arguments in defense of the political value of leisure time and the importance of the humanities in an age defined by the language of science and industry. Written in Slouka's supple and unerring prose, celebratory, critical, and passionate, Essays from the Nick of Time reawakens us to the moment and place in which we find ourselves, caught between the fading presence of the past and the neon lure of the future.

Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) was the most influential American writer of the nineteenth century. Poets such as Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, and Wallace Stevens descend from Emerson, as do thinkers such as John Dewey and William James. This volume of critical interpretations focuses on Emerson's Essays: First Series (1841) and Essays: Second Series (1844), which encompass some of his most important works-"History," "Self-Reliance," "Circles," "The Poet," and "Experience" among others. These essays exemplify Emerson's distinctively rich prose and his radical affirmation of the strength of the individual. The analyses and appreciations collected here place Emerson's essays in the context of literary and intellectual history, grapple with the implications of his epigrams and tropes, and link his shifts of perspective and tone to the changes in Emerson's life. Together they illuminate the complexity and scope of the seminal works of America's most influential writer and thinker. Book jacket.

Philosophical Sojourns In Aesthetics Existence And Education written by James M. Magrini and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-12-14 with Philosophy categories.
This collection of seven speculative and critical essays initiates a journey, inviting readers to abide, for a short time, with philosophical themes emerging from aesthetics, poetry, existentialism, and education. It opens vistas into the insightful wisdom of Nietzsche, Heidegger, Jaspers, Rilke, and Plato’s Socrates. The book confronts such perennial issues as the practice of philosophy as a way of life, the understanding of subjecthood and human transcendence, the pursuit of ethical knowledge in ways that inform and direct the choices we make in the company of others, and the philosophical quest for unique ways of learning that transcend contemporary practices embracing standardization and adopting an instrumental approach to education. This book is novel in that it offers these insights across broad, but related, fields of study, for, although essentially a philosophy text, it provides scholarly inroads to the academic fields of literary critique, classical studies, psychology, and educational theory. The text could be effectively employed as a secondary avenue of study in institutions of higher learning, supplementing primary philosophical sources in the curriculum. In addition to programs offering advanced degrees, the book also serves as a challenging introductory text for students at the undergraduate level demonstrating an interest in, and proclivity for, philosophy.

Breaking Time S Arrow written by Matthew McDonald and has been published by Indiana University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-06-16 with Music categories.
A critical look at the work of and philosophical influences upon the American Modernist composer. Charles Ives (1874–1954) moved traditional compositional practice in new directions by incorporating modern and innovative techniques with nostalgic borrowings of 19th century American popular music and Protestant hymns. Matthew McDonald argues that the influence of Emerson and Thoreau on Ives’s compositional style freed the composer from ordinary ideas of time and chronology, allowing him to recuperate the past as he reached for the musical unknown. McDonald links this concept of the multi-temporal in Ives’s works to Transcendentalist understandings of eternity. His approach to Ives opens new avenues for inquiry into the composer’s eclectic and complex style. “A trenchant and intellectually expansive reading of Ives’s relationship to time by connecting several compositions?and indeed, the composer’s larger conceptualization of the past, present, and future?to the Emersonian concept of the “everlasting Now.” This book is a wonderfully written, important contribution to scholarship on the music of Charles Ives.” —Gayle Sherwood Magee, author of Charles Ives Reconsidered “McDonald investigates both the temporal and spatial effects of multidirectional motion, as well as its ramifications for understanding some of the larger philosophical issues that are raised in Ives’s music.” —Music & Letters, May 2015 “McDonald brings together analytic and personal factors to sharpen the image of the composer in convincing ways. . . . This book . . . deserves a close reading. The bibliography provides a select list of scores and recordings as well as articles, books, catalogues, and unpublished commentaries. This book is recommended for college and university libraries and for readers with a music theory background.” —Music Reference Services Quarterly
