In this volume, internationally renowned chemists recount their roles in the progress of chemistry research toward elucidation of biological processes. Beginning with a historical perspective on the development of X-ray crystallography, the reader is regaled with first-hand accounts of research milestones. Included are descriptions of the cutting-edge nuclear-magnetic-resonance and electron-paramagnetic-resonance spectroscopic techniques, the dynamics of ultra-fast reactions, and the central problem of molecular oxygen activation in biological processes. The roles of chiral auxiliaries in organic synthesis and of photochemistry in natural product synthesis are told, and innovations in combinatorial synthesis approaches are described. Contemporary issues in molecular recognition and modulation of molecular function are addressed, concluding with a missive regarding how the frontiers of medical ethics may be breached by molecular manipulations. The contributors, who number among the finest scientists in the world, including two Nobel Prize winners, are Peter B. Dervan, Jack D. Dunitz, Christian Griesinger, Jean-Marie Lehn, Thomas F. Prisner, Gerhard Quinkert, Peter G. Schultz, Helmut Schwarz, Dieter Seebach, and Ahmed Zewail. Additionally, there is a prologue by Albert Eschenmoser, for whom this collection was conceived, and an epilogue that contains facsimiles of notes from his landmark lecture 'Synthesis of Co-Enzyme B12: A Vehicle for Teaching Organic Synthesis'. This book is definitely a must for all who want to read, or to read again, where we stand in our chemical comprehension of the fascinating relationship between chemical structure and biological processes, how we got here, and what the future might hold.

Essays In The Philosophy Of Chemistry written by Eric R. Scerri and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016 with Science categories.

The philosophy of chemistry has emerged in recent years as a new and autonomous field within the Anglo-American philosophical tradition. With the development of this new discipline, Eric Scerri and Grant Fisher's Essays in the Philosophy of Chemistry is a timely and definitive guide to all current thought in this field. This edited volume will serve to map out the distinctive features of the field and its connections to the philosophies of the natural sciences and general philosophy of science more broadly. It will be a reference for students and professional alike. Both the philosophy of chemistry and philosophies of scientific practice alike reflect the splitting of analytical and continental scholastic traditions, and some philosophers are turning for inspiration from the familiar resources of analytical philosophy to influences from the continental tradition and pragmatism. While philosophy of chemistry is practiced very much within the familiar analytical tradition, it is also capable of trail-blazing new philosophical approaches. In such a way, the seemingly disparate disciplines such as the hard sciences and philosophy become much more linked.

Mixture And Chemical Combination written by Pierre Duhem and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-04-17 with Science categories.

Much of Duhem's work as a professional scientist was closely related to the newly emerging discipline of physical chemistry. The book and associated papers translated here revolve around his concomitant philosophical and historical interests in chemistry-topics largely uncovered by Duhem's writings hitherto available in English. He understood contemporary concerns of chemists to be a development of the ancient dispute over the nature of mixture. Having developed his historical account from distinctions drawn from the atomists and Aristotelians of antiquity, he places his own views of chemical combination squarely within the Aristotelian tradition. Apart from illuminating Duhem's own work, it is of interest to see how the ancient dispute can be related to modern science by someone competent to make such comparisons. The book is lucid and logically stringent without assuming any particular mathematical prerequisites, and provides a masterly statement of an important line of nineteenth century thought which is of interest in its own right as well as providing insight into Duhem's broader philosophical views.

Essays on Analytical Chemistry: In Memory of Professor Anders Ringbom is a collection of analytical chemistry papers and research studies in honor of the memory of Professor Anders Ringbom, a highly esteemed researcher and teacher. The papers are grouped under the following headings: Chemical Equilibria, Titrations, Photometric Analysis, Electrochemistry, Separations, Trace Analysis, Kinetic Analysis, and Other Analytical Topics. This book is organized into eight parts encompassing 52 chapters. The first part deals with the concept of chemical equilibria in acid-base and metal complexes. The next parts cover the applications of different titration techniques, photometric analysis, electrochemistry, and separation techniques. Other parts highlight the principles and application of trace analysis, including the determination of heavy metals and airborne particulates. The last parts contain papers that examine the analytical application of the rate phenomena of several chemical reactions. These parts also tackle the topics of sampling, statistical analysis in analytical chemistry, and the features of photoelectron spectroscopy and capillary electrophoresis. This book will be of great value to analytical chemists, researchers, and analytical chemistry students.

Essays In Historical Chemistry written by T. E. Thorpe and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-06-13 with Science categories.

Excerpt from Essays in Historical Chemistry This book consists mainly of lectures and addresses given at various times, and to audiences of very different type, during the last twenty-five years. These essays in historical chemistry are now put together with the object of showing how the labours of some of the greatest masters of chemical science have contributed to its development. The book has no pretensions to be considered a history of chemistry, even of the time to which its narratives relate. Many honoured names - as Black, Dalton, Berzelius, Liebig, Hofmann - that ought, in all fitness, to find a fuller notice in such a series of biographical sketches, are only incidentally mentioned. The only excuse I can advance is, that it has not as yet been my good fortune to be in a position to offer an account of their labours. The greater number of the sketches in the present volume have already been seen in print; but in arranging them for republication I have not hesitated to make such alterations and corrections as seemed necessary or desirable in view of their appearance in a connected series. Certain of the lectures, when delivered, were illustrated by experiments of which mention was made in the accounts originally published.
