Excerpt from Reputations: Essays in Criticism Of the many young poets who died or were killed during the European War, none perhaps has proved a greater loss to English letters than James Elroy Flecker. By his death in Switzerland of consumption at the age of thirty England was deprived of a poet who loved her passionately whose work will endure long into the days of peace, whose reputation is likely to go on increasing, rather than to wane. At present his poetry is still, I think, not as familiar as it deserves to be, though the number of his admirers is. steadily growing both in England and in America. Flecker was never the idol of any particular set during his lifetime, and since his death very little has been written about his personality as it appeared to those who knew him well. The memories of one who valued his friendship and was closely associated with him during his literary life may thus be not unworthy of record. Excerpt from Essays in Criticism: First Series Several of the Essays which are here collected and reprinted had the good or the bad fortune to be much criticised at the time of their first appearance. I am not now going to in ict upon the reader a reply to those criticisms for one or two explanations which are desirable, I shall elsewhere, perhaps, be able some day to find an opportunity; but, indeed. It is not in my nature, - some of my critics would rather say, not in my power, - to dispute on behalf of any Opinion, even my own, very obstinately. To try and approach truth on one side after another, not to strive or cry, nor to persist in pressing forward, on any one side, with violence and self-will, - it is only thus, it seems to me, that mortals may hope to gain any vision of the mysterious Goddess, whom we shall never see except in outline, but only thus even in outline. He who will do nothing but fight impetu ously towards her on his own, one, favourite, parti cular line, is inevitably destined to run his head into the folds of the black robe in which she is wrapped. Excerpt from Essays in Literary Criticism Very sensible that the only value they are likely to have will arise not from any special literary ability or insight of mine, but solely from the constant de light which I have taken in the writers here reviewed, - who have indeed lived with me and in me, till their world has become a genuine part of my own by no means too rich intellectual life. It is in this way, I cannot help thinking, - by soaking themselves thor oughly with a few great writers, instead of spreading their interests so widely as most literary men do, - that educated men of only ordinary capacities such as mine may do most for the service of literature and the culture of their own minds. It is but few who in any age can really aspire to the position of great cr'itics, - critics such as Coleridge, or Hazlitt, or Lamb, or Lowell, or Emerson. But many, by a more intense concentration of their inferior intel lectual powers, might become both good interpreters and, to a certain extent, just critics of a few great. Excerpt from Literary Types: Being Essays in Criticism I have applied the title Of Literary Types to the following essays in criticism, because each writer that I have treated of seems to me to develop a particular phase in literary history. Landor I have termed Dramatist, not because he wrote one or two plays, but because all the literary work he did was essentially dramatic in intention and execution. I have appended the epithet of Man of Letters to De Quincey for the reason that no narrower term seems able to adequately express his compass or versatility. The words Essayist, Philosopher, and Novelist, apply naturally, without need of any explanation here, to Lamb, Carlyle, and Dickens. A word is, perhaps, necessary to explain why I have set down the name Poet as an epithet distinctive Of Coleridge, considering what I have said Of him in the following pages. I have done so because he not only was a pre-eminent poet. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Pope's Essay on Criticism Of students, both in England and in the Colonies, the notes are very copious, but I have endeavoured to. Make them as succinct and relevant as I could. I have, I hope, left no passage or even word, likely to present any difficulty, unexplained. It has been meces sary to quote somewhat freely from ancient classical authors, but where quotations have been given they have always been translated. It seems a great pity. Excerpt from Progress and Science: Essays in Criticism This volume does not contain a systematic treatment of its large subject. I have sought to indicate its character in the subtitle. Excerpt from Essays in Criticism, Vol. 2 of 2 Still, in spite of their fascinations, the contents of this collection sometimes rouse the critical spirit within one. It happened that lately, after I had been think ing much of Marcus Aurelius and his times, I took down the Dictionnaire des Ongines da Gatian iswe, to see what it had to say about paganism and pagans. Excerpt from Essays in Biography and Criticism An apology may be deemed requisite for offering to the public a work, of which even the germ is found in pieces composed at so early an age. Two consid rations chie y weighed with the writer in permitting the publication. He could not let slip the opportunity Offered of bringing together that portion Of his early performances, to which, however sensible of their defects, he could yet deliberately append his signa ture, setting them apart from that far larger portion which he would now altogether cast behind him, as mere confusions Of a too much wasted youth. And still more powerfully was he in uenced by the re ec tion, which has for a long time had a firm hold on his mind, that, where a reading public is so extended as that Of America, capacities Of literary enjoyment, and susceptibilities to instruction, will vary so much, both in kind and degree, that it is by no means easy, if possible, to judge, within certain limits, from the ah stract character Of a book, whether it will or will not prove useless: and that, therefore, an author, abdi cating, in great measure, the right to decide as to the worthiness or unworthiness Of his compositions, ought to bow to the unsought expression of public will. Such an expression seemed to be found in the Offer of American publishers to issue these volumes: and the author screens himself against all attack, by the plain declaration, that they would not now, perhaps would never, have appeared, but for the enterprise and generosity Of Messrs. Gould and lincoln. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
