Pp. 283-297, "Mykhailo Drahomanov and the Problem of Ukrainian-Jewish Relations", discuss the views of the Russian nationalist as expressed in two articles. In the first (1875) he opposed legal discrimination against Jews, as it was based on medieval prejudice and did not achieve its aim of safeguarding the peasants' interests. The second was a response to the pogroms of 1881-82. He blamed the Russian policy of concentrating the Jews in the Pale of Settlement for Ukrainian-Jewish tensions. He also criticized the Jews as a parasitic class which felt no solidarity with the Ukraine. He saw the solution in a Jewish socialist movement and a federation of Russia and Austro-Hungary, in which Jews would enjoy equal rights. Pp. 299-313, "The Problem of Ukrainian-Jewish Relations in Nineteenth-Century Ukrainian Political Thought, " discuss the approaches of three Ukrainian thinkers to the "Jewish question": Mykola Kostomarov, Mykhailo Drahomanov, and Ivan Franko. Kostomarov published an article in 1862 in "Osnova" to counter accusations in the Jewish journal "Sion" against the Ukrainian cultural movement. He supported Jewish emancipation, but accused the Jews of clannishness, indifference to the fate of their country, and acting as instruments of Polish oppression and exploiters of the peasants. Franko was a disciple of Drahomanov; he adopted the idea of Ukrainian independence and advocated Jewish-Ukrainian cooperation.

A first attempt to present an approach to Ukrainian history which goes beyond the standard 'national narrative' schemes, predominant in the majority of post-Soviet countries after 1991, in the years of implementing 'nation-building projects'. An unrivalled collection of essays by the finest scholars in the field from Ukraine, Russia, USA, Germany, Austria and Canada, superbly written to a high academic standard. The various chapters are methodologically innovative and thought-provoking. The biggest Eastern European country has ancient roots but also the birth pangs of a new autonomous state. Its historiography is characterized by animated debates, in which this book takes a definite stance. The history of Ukraine is not written here as a linear, teleological narrative of ethnic Ukrainians but as a multicultural, multidimensional history of a diversity of cultures, religious denominations, languages, ethical norms, and historical experience. It is not presented as causal explanation of 'what has to have happened' but rather as conjunctures and contingencies, disruptions, and episodes of 'lack of history.'

"In the twentieth century, the American political scientist Zbigniew Brzezinski repeatedly stressed that without Ukraine, Russia ceases to be an empire; and that if Ukraine joins, the Russian empire, like the phoenix, will always be reborn. This is the main reason for Russia's war against Ukraine in 2014. And it is also the reason for its “phantom pain” every time this Eurasian empire loses Ukraine – without Ukraine, Russia remains simply an Asian “Muscovy”. Hence the denial of historical facts, the state propaganda about “one Russian people, common history and state,” and, above all, the denial of Ukraine's right to its own statehood, territory, and resources. A successful European form of democracy in Ukraine is a threat to Russia's authoritarian, “oriental” form of governance. Putin tries to justify his full-scale invasion and destruction of Ukraine, and the genocide of its people by distorting historical facts and launching a massive propaganda war against Ukraine. This book is a powerful antidote to it. In “Essays of the History of Ukraine,” General Smeshko debunks Russia's appropriation of the name and history of Kyivan Rus, as well as the myths of “one nation”, the “sacredness of Crimea”, etc. Using historical examples dating back more than two millennia, the author demonstrates that Ukraine and Russia have developed along very different civilizational vectors – cultural, linguistic, legal and institutional. In addition, with reference to Ukraine, the author provides answers to important questions of our time: What is the edifice of modern European civilization? What are its foundations? And, most importantly, have the components of this civilization been present on the territory of modern Ukraine since ancient times? Smeshko also describes what modern Ukraine is and gives a convincing answer to the question of whether Ukrainians are Europeans or “Eurasians” in terms of their origin, culture and aspirations for further development. A separate section of the book is devoted to the vision of the modern national idea of Ukraine and the author's formulation of three basic laws for building democracy in any country in the world. This may become the basis for the development of a powerful, self-sufficient, economically developed and militarily strong Ukraine in the 21st century."--Amazon.com.

Much of the analysis presented in the essays that make up this book deals with the responses of Ukraine's Eastern Christians to the challenge of the national idea. The book places the history and current status of Ukraine's Orthodox and Greek Catholic communities into the context of the modern Ukrainian national revival of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and the resurgence of Ukrainian national consciousness in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
