If you want to know why our nation's leaders have failed to solve America's crime problem, these essays expose a number of areas where either not enough thought is being given, or the thinking is just wrong. While crime dominates America's media and political scene, there is very little intelligent insight on the topic coming from those who would know most about it, criminals. These essays change that. The essays begin by addressing crime as part of a larger social fabric that cannot be fixed by the simple passing of a few more laws. After focusing on the big picture, the essays become more specific, examining different ways to make a more efficient and effective legal system. In part two, these essays expand to address a number of other social issues like the war in Iraq, labor issues, health care and the environment. The reader is forced to continuously re-examine their beliefs. Torsrud strips down problems to their core, creating arguments that are insightful, hard to challenge, and at times even humorous.

Many of the world's most important historical figures were imprisoned for holding unpopular or unorthodox beliefs. They used their time behind bars to write books that shaped the course of history. This collection of new essays offers a wide-ranging examination of influential works written--in whole or in part--while their authors were in prison or exile. Each chapter explores a different text and contains a brief biography and summary of the circumstances surrounding the author's imprisonment, along with a critical examination of the writing and its legacy. Authors covered include Plato, Thomas Paine, Gandhi, Thoreau, Bertrand Russell, Hitler and Martin Luther King, Jr.

Treatment For Crime written by David Birks and has been published by Engaging Philosophy this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018 with Law categories.

Preventing recidivism is one of the aims of criminal justice, yet existing means of pursuing this aim are often poorly effective, highly restrictive of basic freedoms, and significantly harmful. Incarceration, for example, tends to be disruptive of personal relationships and careers, detrimental to physical and mental health, restrictive of freedom of movement, and rarely more than modestly effective at preventing recidivism. Crime-preventing neurointerventions (CPNs) are increasingly being advocated, and there is a growing use of testosterone-lowering agents to prevent recidivism in sexual offenders, and strong political and scientific interest in developing pharmaceutical treatments for psychopathy and anti-social behaviour. Future neuroscientific advances could yield further CPNs; we could ultimately have at our disposal a range of drugs capable of suppressing violent aggression and it is not difficult to imagine possible applications of such drugs in crime prevention. Neurointerventions hold out the promise of preventing recidivism in ways that are both more effective, and more humane. But should neurointerventions be used in crime prevention? And may the state ever permissibly impose CPNs as part of the criminal justice process, either unconditionally, or as a condition of parole or early release? The use of CPNs raises several ethical concerns, as they could be highly intrusive and may threaten fundamental human values, such as bodily integrity and freedom of thought. In the first book-length treatment of this topic, Treatment for Crime, brings together original contributions from internationally renowned moral and political philosophers to address these questions and consider the possible issues, recognizing how humanity has a track record of misguided, harmful and unwarrantedly coercive use of neurotechnological 'solutions' to criminality. The Engaging Philosophy series is a new forum for collective philosophical engagement with controversial issues in contemporary society.

America Unraveled written by Phillip Torsrud and has been published by iUniverse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-10-08 with Political Science categories.

Most Americans are concerned about their politicians inability to identify, much less solve their nations problems. America Unraveled explores a number of Americas most pressing social issues, the economy, justice system, culture, and many historical events occurring between 2008 and 2012. Incompetence is attacked in a bipartisan manner with the authors loyalty going to truth, common sense, and logic. Why should any American have allegiance to Democrats or Republicans when they seem so preoccupied with serving the private interests of their big money supporters. If you are looking for real constructive criticism, this book is for you. Phillip Torsrud has also written Preemptive Strike which is a novel on human trafficking, and Essays of a Penitentiary Philosopher which explores the structural failings of Americas Justice system. While many of the topics addressed in America Unraveled are complicated, the simple and direct style of writing makes the reading not only easy, but enjoyable.

Intolerable written by Michel Foucault and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-08-31 with Prison riots categories.

A groundbreaking collection of writings by Michel Foucault and the Prisons Information Group documenting their efforts to expose France's inhumane treatment of prisoners Founded by Michel Foucault and others in 1970-71, the Prisons Information Group (GIP) circulated information about the inhumane conditions within the French prison system. Intolerable makes available for the first time in English a fully annotated compilation of materials produced by the GIP during its brief but influential existence, including an exclusive new interview with GIP member Hélène Cixous and writings by Gilles Deleuze and Jean Genet. These archival documents--public announcements, manifestos, reports, pamphlets, interventions, press conference statements, interviews, and round table discussions--trace the GIP's establishment in post-1968 political turmoil, the new models of social activism it pioneered, the prison revolts it supported across France, and the retrospective assessments that followed its denouement. At the same time, Intolerable offers a rich, concrete exploration of Foucault's concept of resistance, providing a new understanding of the arc of his intellectual development and the genesis of his most influential book, Discipline and Punish. Presenting the account of France's most vibrant prison resistance movement in its own words and on its own terms, this significant and relevant collection also connects the approach and activities of the GIP to radical prison resistance movements today.
