Excerpt from Essays on Indian Topics The essays which are reprinted in this book are offered the public, not as forming a compilation of any intrinsic value, but as contributing to the discussion of current political topics. Indian questions will bear being looked at from a good many points of view. One point of view is that of the Member of Parliament at Westminster; another is that of the Anglo-Indian official; another, that of the Anglicised Native of the Presidency Towns; and another, that of the thorough-going old-fashioned Oriental. The standpoint of the writer of these amoteur essays is that of an unofficial Englishman, whose work and whose tastes bring him into frequent contact with Oriental society. He speaks as one who prefers living in India to living in Anglo-India, but whose sympathies with the wild theories of doctrinaire politicians are much affected by the fact that he has a throat that may be cut. In this respect, as an Anglo-Indian, he stands at a disadvantage with English theorists on Indian politics. For he can hardly hope to attain to the impartiality and serenity of the English Indo-politician, who, sitting in his comfortable arm-chair, can draw up paper constitutions for India, unbiassed by the dread lest his wife and children should be butchered, or the labours of his life for the improvement of the people around him, his town or his country, should be swept into nothingness by an overwhelming deluge. Third Class In Indian Railways Classic Reprint written by Mahatma Gandhi and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-11-19 with Self-Help categories.

This short collection of essays mostly covers Mahatma Gandhi's personal philosophies and opinions on politics. The first essay is the only one on the Indian railways, and it discusses the shocking conditions imposed on the third class passengers which Ghandi worked to improve. The other essays are Vernacular as Media of Instruction, Swadeshi, Ahimsa, The Moral Basis of Co-operation and finally National Dress. Written around 1915 the titular essay gives a great historical insight into the travel conditions for India's working class a century ago. As ever Ghandi writes with humour, refusing to take himself too seriously. In the other essays he discusses topics such as the connection between politics and religion (still a debated point to this day), spirituality and defends his choice of wearing traditional clothes over European style trousers and shoes. Its short length makes these essays a decent possible introduction to Ghandi and his philosophies, but those who are interested in learning more may wish to find a biography or some of his longer writings. It will be of particular interest to those studying his life and works in greater detail as the essays are mostly drawn from letters and presentations to conferences which he gave. Excerpt from Modern India and the Indians: Being a Series of Impressions, Notes, and Essays They are not a mere reproduction of what has already appeared. Much additional matter has been added, and an attempt has been made to connect the series in some sort of order corresponding to the course of my travels. They need no preface, nor introduction. They may be left to speak for themselves. A further series of Essays embodying my principal researches into Modern Indian religious life will, I hope, he published hereafter. Classical Indian Philosophy written by Peter Adamson and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-03-26 with Philosophy categories.

Peter Adamson and Jonardon Ganeri present a lively introduction to one of the world's richest intellectual traditions: the philosophy of classical India. They begin with the earliest extant literature, the Vedas, and the explanatory works that these inspired, known as Upaniṣads. They also discuss other famous texts of classical Vedic culture, especially the Mahābhārata and its most notable section, the Bhagavad-Gīta, alongside the rise of Buddhism and Jainism. In this opening section, Adamson and Ganeri emphasize the way that philosophy was practiced as a form of life in search of liberation from suffering. Next, the pair move on to the explosion of philosophical speculation devoted to foundational texts called 'sutras,' discussing such traditions as the logical and epistemological Nyāya school, the monism of Advaita Vedānta, and the spiritual discipline of Yoga. In the final section of the book, they chart further developments within Buddhism, highlighting Nagārjuna's radical critique of 'non-dependent' concepts and the no-self philosophy of mind found in authors like Dignāga, and within Jainism, focusing especially on its 'standpoint' epistemology. Unlike other introductions that cover the main schools and positions in classical Indian philosophy, Adamson and Ganeri's lively guide also pays attention to philosophical themes such as non-violence, political authority, and the status of women, while considering textual traditions typically left out of overviews of Indian thought, like the Cārvaka school, Tantra, and aesthetic theory as well. Adamson and Ganeri conclude by focusing on the much-debated question of whether Indian philosophy may have influenced ancient Greek philosophy and, from there, evaluate the impact that this area of philosophy had on later Western thought.
