The history of the peace movement in the United States was one of dramatic change: in the mid-IKWs it consisted of a few provincial societies; by 1912 it had become eminently respectable and listed among its members an impressive number of the nation's leaders; by 1918 it was once again weak and remote from those who formulated national policy. Along with these fluctuations went equally substantial changes of leadership and purpose that, as C. Roland Marchand emphasizes, reflected the motives of the various reform groups that successively joined and dominated the movement. Most of those who joined were not devoted solely to the cause of world peace, but saw in the programs of the movement a chance for the fulfillment of their own mare immediately relevant goals. Consequently the story of the peace movement reflects the concerns of such groups as the international lawyers who wanted a world court of arbitration as an alternative to war, the business leaders who believed that international economic stability would be endangered by war, and the labor unions who felt that the working class suffered most in war. Originally published in 1973. Religious, political, social, and health reform earmarked the Progressive Era. The era's health reform movement—like today's clean living movement—saw campaigns against alcohol, tobacco, drugs, and sexuality. It included crusades for exercise, vegetarian diets, and alternative health care and concerns about eugenics and new diseases. Covering the years leading up to the Progressive Era through the 1920s, this book provides entries on the central figures, events, crusades, legislation, publications and terms of the health reform movements, while a detailed timeline ties health reform to political, social, and religious movements. A valuable resource for scholars, students, and laymen interested in earlier health reform movements.

The pragmatist philosopher Jane Addams (1860-1935) is celebrated as the founder of Hull House, the settlement house for disadvantaged people in Chicago, where for many years she put into practice her progressive ideas for social reform. Addams was also deeply involved in international peace efforts. Remaining a pacifist throughout World War I, she was a founder of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom and went on to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931. Her books and essays on peace are frequently cited but long out of print and hard to obtain. Interest in Jane Addams is rapidly growing. As the American government withdraws from international treaties, her call for international law and cooperation has a new relevance. And in our increasingly dangerous world, her call for peace is being heard again. This volume contains the most complete collection ever made of Addams's essays, articles, and speeches on peace and international relations, written between 1899 and 1935. >

Focusing on Vancouver's social history, the essays written for thisspecial edition of BC Studies treat hitherto neglected areas of thecity's past and bring new insights into how its residents lived andworked. Receiving particular attention is the socio-economic andresidential structure of Vancouver with one author arguing that thecity's economy created an urban working class which was at oncemore complex and politically more conservative than that of the highlypolarized communities on Vancouver Island and in the Interior.

The work of both socio-legal scholars and specialists working in social movements research continues to contribute to our understanding of how law relates to and informs the politics of social movements. In the 1990s, an important line of new research, most of it initiated by those working in the law and society tradition, began to bridge the gaps between these two areas of scholarship. This work includes new approaches to grouplegal mobilization politics; analysis of the judicial impact on social reform struggles; studies of individual legal mobilization in civil disputing and an almost entirely new area of research incause lawyering. It brings together the best of this research introduced by a detailed essay by the editor.
