Excerpt from Essays on the Pursuit of Truth and on the Progress of Knowledge The volume in which the two following Essays first appeared, in the year 1829, was on the whole favourably received; so much so, at least, as to be out of print in two or three years. The Author has since been repeatedly urged, in various quarters, by strangers as well as friends, to publish another edition; a step which he has hitherto declined, partly on account of the tardy and limited encouragement extended to such works, but chiefly because he was dissatisfied with the principal Essay, as a less adequate view of the subject than he was capable of presenting, and he did not wish it to re-appear without such a complete revision as other studies prevented him for a season from bestowing upon it. Within the last year, however, he has had an opportunity of performing this task. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Essays on the Pursuit of Truth: On the Progress of Knowledge, and the Fundamental Principle of All Evidence and Expectation Few words will be necessary in introducing the present volume to the public. Some of those who did the author the honour of testifying a favourable estimate of a former Essay of his on the Formation of Opinions, expressed at the same time a regret that he had passed too lightly over one very important part of the subject; namely, the conduct of men in the application of their means and faculties to the investigation of truth. While he had explained more or less to their satisfaction in what manner the mind is affected by the circumstances in which it is placed, and the inevitable determination of its views by the evidence presented to it, they thought that he had indicated in too cursory a way the duties of mankind in the collection and examination of that evidence, the effect of which, when once brought before the understanding, is so completely uncontrollable by the will. Excerpt from Essays on Truth and Reality I have been unwilling to include so many pages on Pragmatism. The subject certainly does not occupy a corresponding space in my mind. But the reader perhaps will recognize that, having been in a manner forced here to write in self-defence, I am no longer free merely to consult my own wishes. He will find, I trust, that the discussion, if too long, throws light on some points of interest; and in any case the remedy remains in his power. On the other hand, I should be sorry if the examination of 'Radical Empiricism' were left unread. It is a satisfaction to me, when approaching the end of my own career, to note (whatever school or tendency may from time to time be in fashion) the increasing devotion amongst us to metaphysical inquiry. There has been, I think, a rise in the general level of English philosophical thought such as fifty years ago might well have seemed incredible. I am the more resigned to add that the best which I can now myself expect to do is to collect some other scattered writings, as well as perhaps to republish those early volumes which I can no longer hope to re-write. Excerpt from Reality and Truth: A Critical and Constructive Essay Concerning Knowledge, Certainty, and Truth For many years it has been my great desire to give to my fellow-countrymen, and, if might be, to the English speaking world, a critical but definite treatment of the foundations of knowledge, truth, and certainty. N 0 pro blem could conceivably be more insistent or more urgent. Like the piles that are driven deep below the surface of the water, unseen but necessary supports, the theory of knowledge upholds all. Whatever we attempt within the whole vast range of the theoretical or practical sciences, all depends ultimately upon our solution of the problem of knowledge. Thus whether we are interested in theology or natural science, in speculative philosophy or social work, in politics and economics, or art and literature, matters little. \vhen one man sets out to think or two set out to agree upon some idea or plan, they invariably rely upon some accepted view of the limits and possibilities of our knowing powers, and al most invariably they differ. We all have some working theory of knowledge, however ill-defined and inarticulate. And there lies the danger. Excerpt from The Nature of Truth: An Essay The following Essay does not pretend to establish a new theory. Its object is to examine certain typical notions of truth, one or other of which - whether in the form of a vague assumption, or raised to the level of an explicit theory - has hitherto served as the basis of philosophical speculation. If I am not mistaken, every one of these typical notions and accredited theories of truth fails sooner or later to maintain itself against critical investigation. And I have tried, whilst exhibiting the nature and the grounds of their failure. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 'A Knowledgeable Approach to Truth' is Volume I of a projected two-volume 'collected essays' and, as suggested by the title, it puts some store by the utilization of knowledge in the pursuit of truth, however one might wish to interpret such a loaded term. This particular volume contains essayistic material right from the beginning of John O'Loughlin's commitment to philosophy in 1977, viz. the first four essays, the first of which has been lifted from 'Between Truth and Illusion' and the other three from 'The Illusory Truth', both of which were heavily into dualism. Then comes a substantial number of essays from a 1979 collection entitled 'The Fall of Love', some of which owe more to Spenglerian historicism than to dualistic relativity, and, after one essay culled from 'The Transcendental Future' (1980), namely "The Ultimate Purpose" which, though indubitably essayistic, served as an introduction to the title in question, we conclude with all the material, including an aphoristic appendix, that is to be found in 'The Way of Evolution' (1981), most of which, like the aforementioned essay and indeed the title of which it was originally a part, is beyond both dualism and Spenglerian historicism in what, for the author, amounted to an intellectual 'rebirth', in which life became interpreted in relation to a transcendent goal as the product of an evolutionary resolve that owed something, though not everything, to the estimable likes of Friedrich Nietzsche and Teilhard de Chardin. Such, in brief, is the scope of this first volume, which paves the way for the second and more advanced volume to follow in which not knowledge but truth, conceived in unequivocally transcendental terms, is the main motive and operative factor.
