“This volume revisits the foundations of classical political economy and outlines on that basis a new research paradigm. Ajit Sinha presents an extremely ambitious and challenging work that opens new and invaluable vistas on classical economic theory and economics at large.” Roberto Scazzieri, Professor of Economic Analysis, University of Bologna and National Lincei Academy, Italy. “For a quarter of a century Ajit Sinha has worked on the classical theory of value, reinterpreting Adam Smith, David Ricardo and Karl Marx in terms of his own original, and often contested, interpretation of Piero Sraffa. This fascinating volume brings together several of Sinha's most perceptive and most contentious papers. Always scholarly, stimulating and provocative, it is essential reading for anyone with an interest in classical value theory.” John King, Emeritus Professor, La Trobe University, Australia. This collection of essays invites the reader to trace the intellectual journey of the author from his early incisive exploration and critique of key categories in Marxian economics, through his insights into classical economic theory, culminating in his pioneering and definitive reading of the economics of Sraffa. Where the author’s position has significantly changed he provides notations and explanations, and the addition of two new chapters written especially for this volume complete the scholarly journey. Following three decades worth of study, this book brings together a set of important contributions that not only give historical perspective but makes them convenient and accessible for students and researchers today.

This book presents a comprehensive account of more than 200 years of controversy on the classical theories of value and distribution. The author focuses on four, perhaps most critical classics — Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations, David Ricardo’s Principles of Political Economy, Karl Marx’s Capital and Piero Sraffa’s Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities. The book highlights several significant differences in the widely celebrated theories of the four authors as it searches for the ‘classical standpoint’ that separates them from the ‘moderns’. It also challenges canonical interpretations to analyse their flaws and weaknesses, in addition to the already obvious strengths, and critically engages with the major alternative interpretations and criticisms of the theories. With a new Afterword that follows up on the debates and developments since the first edition, this book will appeal to scholars and academics of economic theory and philosophy, as well as to the general reader.

Mill's economic analysis. The papers in this collection cover both Smithian classicism and the Ricardo-Marx-Sraffa classicism which is represented here by four papers on the work of Krishna Bharadwaj, a contemporary interpreter of this variant of the classical tradition.

Understanding Classical Economics written by Heinz-Dieter Kurz and has been published by Psychology Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with Business & Economics categories.

The classical approach to economic problems, which can be traced back to Adam Smith and David Ricardo, has been revived in recent years. The essays in this collection argue that this classical approach holds the key to an explanation of important present-day economic phenomena. The study opens with a clarification of what is meant by classical economics and examines how modern methods of economic analysis are related to the works of the classical economists. Chapters deal with the problem of economic growth and foreign trade. Contributors attempt to show that both the von Neumann growth model and the new theories of endogenous growth belong to the classical tradition. They also consider the work of Piero Saffra and clarify some of the more difficult aspects of his analysis. The (un)importance of the labour theory of value in classical thinking is reviewed and the work closes with observations on the critique of classical theory.

Essays On Marx S Theory Of Value written by Isaak Ilyich Rubin and has been published by Pattern Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-22 with Political Science categories.

Isaak Ilyich Rubin (1886-1937) was a Soviet economist who participated in the Russian Revolution and was a researcher at the Marx-Engels Institute Though his ideas were suppressed by the Soviet Union and he was eventually killed after being accused of Trotskyism, his ideas have since been rehabilitated within modern Marxism. Essays on Marx's Theory of Value (1924) emphasizes the importance of Marx's theory of commodity fetishism within the labor theory of value. It also argues that Marx's mature economic work represented the culmination of his lifetime project to understand how human creative power is shaped by social structures. He also discusses commodity production as a mere theoretical abstraction that only explains one aspect of a developed capitalist economy. The concept of value, as understood by Rubin, cannot exist without the other elements of a full-blown capitalist economy: money, capital, the existence of a proletariat, and so on. This Radical Reprint by Pattern Books is made to be accessible and as close to only manufacturing cost as possible.

This book presents a substantial collection of essays from a wide range of well respected scholars addressing several aspects of Piero Sraffa’s economics in light of continuing controversies over the interpretation that should be placed on his work. It moves beyond extant scholarship with an added emphasis on the philosophical dimension of Sraffa’s seminal work, Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities. Contributors probe new ways of thinking about the political economy of Sraffa and in doing so, alongside the comments to each contribution by other scholars, provide a cutting edge debate and discussion on non-mainstream economic theory. This book will be of interest to academics and advanced graduate students in economics, with additional interest from scholars in philosophy and the methodology of science.

Since the latest crisis of capitalism broke out in 2008, Marx has been back in fashion, and sometimes it seems that his ideas have never been as topical, or as commanding of respect and interest, as they are today. This edited collection arises from one of the largest international conferences dedicated to the bicentenary of Marx’s birth. The volume contains 16 chapters authored by globally renowned scholars and is divided into two parts: I) On the Critique of Politics; II) On the Critique of Political Economy. These contributions, from multiple academic disciplines, offer diverse perspectives on why Marx is still so relevant for our times and make this book a source of great appeal for both expert scholars of Marx as well as students and general readers who are approaching his theories for the first time.
