And no man, I think, however firm his personal convictions, can be, or ought to be, entirely unmoved by signs which appear to indicate that the most thorough and earnest thought Of his time is drifting in a direction opposite to his own, and convincing itself that what seems to him the light of a growing day is but the rich after-glow of a departed and unreturning sun.
