This is a book by an educator for educators. After teaching in public high schools for over twenty years, I have decided to try to give back. This work is the result. It is a thorough list of 365 tips for teachers who want to become better in every way, covering everything from discipline, relationships at school (teacher/student, teacher/teacher, teacher/administrator, and teacher/parent), wellness, mental health, and general success in an education career. I draw on what I’ve learned from my experiences (both positive and negative), my successes, my failures, and just plain common sense and logic. It took me a few years to compile this list and I feel like I can offer help for teachers over a variety of aspects of the teaching professions. I imagine that important reasons for writing this book at this time are the ever-expanding content of curricula, the excessive demands on lecturing staff, and the relentless pressure in clinical settings which mean that many staff do not have the time to stand back, take stock and review where they have got to. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) of 2004 has placed a renewed emphasis on the importance of the regular classroom, the regular classroom teacher and the general curriculum as the primary focus of special education. This book contains over 100 topics that deal with real issues and concerns regarding the regular classroom and the special education process. These concerns range from requirements for referring a child for an individual evaluation, school discipline, classroom-based assessment, IEP meetings, inclusion and mainstreaming, and various legal requirements relating to IDEA, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the No Child Left Behind act. It stresses the importance that every child with a disability must have goals "to enable the child to be involved in and make progress in the general education curriculum."
