This book presents the essentials of a first course in Engineering Maths as simply as possible, and can be used as a supplement to a lecture course and for private study. Based on a collection of short sections specific to certain topics, the text allows students to identify subjects of interest which can be studied separately with little background reading. Each section uses many detailed worked examples to demonstrate theories and techniques. Formal proofs are kept to a minimum, and only included when absolutely necessary. Comprehensive problem sets at the end of each section are an integral part of the text and should be worked through to reinforce the understanding of the subject. Detailed answers are given to over 1300 problems. For reference, lists of mathematical formulae, standard integrals and Laplace Transform pairs are given.

First published in 1992, Essentials of Engineering Mathematics is a widely popular reference ideal for self-study, review, and fast answers to specific questions. While retaining the style and content that made the first edition so successful, the second edition provides even more examples, new material, and most importantly, an introduction to using two of the most prevalent software packages in engineering: Maple and MATLAB. Specifically, this edition includes: Introductory accounts of Maple and MATLAB that offer a quick start to using symbolic software to perform calculations, explore the properties of functions and mathematical operations, and generate graphical output New problems involving the mean value theorem for derivatives Extension of the account of stationary points of functions of two variables The concept of the direction field of a first-order differential equation Introduction to the delta function and its use with the Laplace transform The author includes all of the topics typically covered in first-year undergraduate engineering mathematics courses, organized into short, easily digestible sections that make it easy to find any subject of interest. Concise, right-to-the-point exposition, a wealth of examples, and extensive problem sets at the end each chapter--with answers at the end of the book--combine to make Essentials of Engineering Mathematics, Second Edition ideal as a supplemental textbook, for self-study, and as a quick guide to fundamental concepts and techniques.

Just the math skills you need to excel in the study or practice of engineering Good math skills are indispensable for all engineers regardless of their specialty, yet only a relatively small portion of the math that engineering students study in college mathematics courses is used on a frequent basis in the study or practice of engineering. That's why Essential Math Skills for Engineers focuses on only these few critically essential math skills that students need in order to advance in their engineering studies and excel in engineering practice. Essential Math Skills for Engineers features concise, easy-to-follow explanations that quickly bring readers up to speed on all the essential core math skills used in the daily study and practice of engineering. These fundamental and essential skills are logically grouped into categories that make them easy to learn while also promoting their long-term retention. Among the key areas covered are: Algebra, geometry, trigonometry, complex arithmetic, and differential and integral calculus Simultaneous, linear, algebraic equations Linear, constant-coefficient, ordinary differential equations Linear, constant-coefficient, difference equations Linear, constant-coefficient, partial differential equations Fourier series and Fourier transform Laplace transform Mathematics of vectors With the thorough understanding of essential math skills gained from this text, readers will have mastered a key component of the knowledge needed to become successful students of engineering. In addition, this text is highly recommended for practicing engineers who want to refresh their math skills in order to tackle problems in engineering with confidence.

This student friendly workbook addresses mathematical topics using SONG - a combination of Symbolic, Oral, Numerical and Graphical approaches. The text helps to develop key skills, communication both written and oral, the use of information technology, problem solving and mathematical modelling. The overall structure aims to help students take responsibility for their own learning, by emphasizing the use of self-assessment, thereby enabling them to become critical, reflective and continuing learners – an essential skill in this fast-changing world. The material in this book has been successfully used by the authors over many years of teaching the subject at Sheffield Hallam University. Their SONG approach is somewhat broader than the traditionally symbolic based approach and readers will find it more in the same vein as the Calculus Reform movement in the USA. - Addresses mathematical topics using SONG - a combination of Symbolic, Oral, Numerical and Graphical approaches - Helps to develop key skills, communication both written and oral, the use of information technology, problem solving and mathematical modelling - Encourages students to take responsibility for their own learning by emphasizing the use of self-assessment

The Essential Engineer written by Henry Petroski and has been published by Vintage this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-02-23 with Science categories.
From the acclaimed author of The Pencil and To Engineer Is Human, The Essential Engineer is an eye-opening exploration of the ways in which science and engineering must work together to address our world’s most pressing issues, from dealing with climate change and the prevention of natural disasters to the development of efficient automobiles and the search for renewable energy sources. While the scientist may identify problems, it falls to the engineer to solve them. It is the inherent practicality of engineering, which takes into account structural, economic, environmental, and other factors that science often does not consider, that makes engineering vital to answering our most urgent concerns. Henry Petroski takes us inside the research, development, and debates surrounding the most critical challenges of our time, exploring the feasibility of biofuels, the progress of battery-operated cars, and the question of nuclear power. He gives us an in-depth investigation of the various options for renewable energy—among them solar, wind, tidal, and ethanol—explaining the benefits and risks of each. Will windmills soon populate our landscape the way they did in previous centuries? Will synthetic trees, said to be more efficient at absorbing harmful carbon dioxide than real trees, soon dot our prairies? Will we construct a “sunshade” in outer space to protect ourselves from dangerous rays? In many cases, the technology already exists. What’s needed is not so much invention as engineering. Just as the great achievements of centuries past—the steamship, the airplane, the moon landing—once seemed beyond reach, the solutions to the twenty-first century’s problems await only a similar coordination of science and engineering. Eloquently reasoned and written, The Essential Engineer identifies and illuminates these problems—and, above all, sets out a course for putting ideas into action.
