I am particularly pleased to be able to write the introduction to this book that resulted from a collaborative effort by the Radiology De partment, under the auspices of the Boerhaave Committee for Postgraduate Medical Education of the Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Leiden and the Department of Medical Imaging and Radiological Sciences at Van derbilt University. Magnetic resonance imaging affords the opportunity to interrogate organ and system structure and function in a nondestructive manner without se rious biological implications. Tissue contrast with this modality is ex quisite and inherently superior to that of x-ray computed tomography. The advances to improve signal capture, development of rapid data acquisition techniques, fabrication of more appropriate pulse sequences, and availa bility of contrast agents portend increased versatility and specificity of these studies. Despite the proliferation of numerous general and specialized texts, the developments in MRI occur at such a pace that data in these references are necessarily dated. The technical horizon of MRI is vast with almost li mitless possibilities of signal generation and plan reconstruction. Tissue contrast is so importantly affected by the coupling of signal generation and capture that collective experience of institutions and investigators is extremely important to the initiate and useful even to those indivi duals with the greatest clinical experience.

An image-rich neuroradiology reference and board prep from renowned experts Neuroradiology: The Essentials with MR and CT, Second Edition, written by world-renowned neuroradiologist and MRI pioneer Val Runge, builds on the acclaimed prior edition. The splendidly illustrated compendium features in-depth discussion of important imaging findings, focused primarily on common disease processes. An impressive cadre of international experts contribute to the text, which is written from a clinical radiology perspective and draws from firsthand experiences. MRI physics pearls and tips throughout the book will help radiologists avoid common pitfalls. Designed as a practical educational resource for clinical neuroradiology, the text is divided into three sections: the brain, head and neck, and spine. The brain and spine chapters are divided into subsections covering normal anatomy and major disease categories such as congenital, traumatic, degenerative, vascular, infectious, and neoplastic. Head and neck chapters are organized by major anatomic region. Clinical cases encompass the use of advanced imaging techniques such as perfusion, high-resolution imaging, and spectroscopy. Key Features About 1,300 high-quality MR and CT images illustrate relevant findings and cases, including those often not well-described in more traditional academic textbooks New figures, updates on ultra-high-field 7T MRI, and additional in-depth text on cerebrovascular disease – especially brain aneurysms and AVMs Covers a wide array of diseases – from stroke and multiple sclerosis to cases one might see once a year, such as glutaric acidemia type 1 and CADASIL This excellent clinical resource provides a robust study prep for the boards and is a must-read for radiology residents prior to neuroradiology rotation. A quick reference for diagnosing challenging cases encountered in daily practice, it will also benefit neuroradiology fellows and general radiologists.

"An excellent primer on medical imaging for all members of the medical profession . . . including non-radiological specialists. It is technically solid and filled with diagrams and clinical images illustrating important points, but it is also easily readable . . . So many outstanding chapters . . . The book uses little mathematics beyond simple algebra [and] presents complex ideas in very understandable terms." —Melvin E. Clouse, MD, Vice Chairman Emeritus, Department of Radiology, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Deaconess Professor of Radiology, Harvard Medical School A well-known medical physicist and author, an interventional radiologist, and an emergency room physician with no special training in radiology have collaborated to write, in the language familiar to physicians, an introduction to the technology and clinical applications of medical imaging. It is intentionally brief and not overly detailed, intended to help clinicians with very little free time rapidly gain enough command of the critically important imaging tools of their trade to be able to discuss them confidently with medical and technical colleagues; to explain the general ideas accurately to students, nurses, and technologists; and to describe them effectively to concerned patients and loved ones. Chapter coverage includes: Introduction: Dr. Doe's Headaches Sketches of the Standard Imaging Modalities Image Quality and Dose Creating Subject Contrast in the Primary X-Ray Image Twentieth-Century (Analog) Radiography and Fluoroscopy Radiation Dose and Radiogenic Cancer Risk Twenty-First-Century (Digital) Imaging Digital Planar Imaging Computed Tomography Nuclear Medicine (Including SPECT and PET) Diagnostic Ultrasound (Including Doppler) MRI in One Dimension and with No Relaxation Mapping T1 and T2 Proton Spin Relaxation in 3D Evolving and Experimental Modalities
