A Critical Introduction To Phonology written by Daniel Silverman and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-09-21 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Taking an interdisciplinary approach to phonological theory and analysis, A Critical Introduction to Phonology introduces the key aspects of the discipline. Departing from the mainstream tradition, Daniel Silverman argues that the nature of linguistic sound systems can only be understood in the context of how they are used by speakers and listeners. By proposing that linguistic sound systems are the product of an interaction among sound (acoustics), mind (cognition), and body (physiology), Silverman focuses on the functional consequences of their interaction. Now with each chapter supplemented by a section on “Doing Phonology”, together with phonological examples from a large corpus of data, this expanded second edition offers a provocative introduction to phonological theory. This book is essential reading for all students and researchers of phonology who are already familiar with the standard approaches and provides both a new theoretical background and the mechanical tools for truly successful phonological analyses.

The theory of neutralization and the archiphoneme is well known to have been expounded by the Prague School. It is now being fully accepted and practised by A. Martinet and his associates, to whom Akamatsu refers as the neo-Prague School. The objective is to propose a maximally functionalist theory of neutralization and the archiphoneme by submitting to critical discussion from a functional point of view all the principal notions pertaining to this theory in its traditionally professed form. The author comes up with a theory of neutralization and the archiphoneme which is fundamentally based on but is clearly different from that which is normally associated with the Prague School and the neo-Prague School.

Basics of Phonetics and English Phonology is a textbook for students of English, designed for students following BA foundation courses as no prior knowledge of linguistics is required. It provides students with a sound understanding of the principles of phonetics in general, but also with a special focus on English phonology. In addition, the exercises offer systematic practical training in IPA transcription. The book is designed for German non-native speakers of English, as specific difficulties in practical pronunciation are highlighted, but it can equally be used by any student interested in the mechanisms of spoken English. The transcription exercises at the end of each chapter are both in British and US American standard pronunciation.

The original (1985) edition of this work attempted to cover the main lines of development of phonological theory from the end of the 19th century through the early 1980s. Much work of importance, both theoretical and historiographic, has appeared in subsequent years, and the present edition tries to bring the story up to the end of the 20th century, as the title promised. This has involved an overall editing of the text, in the process correcting some errors of fact and interpretation, as well as the addition of new material and many new references.

This third edition is basically the same as the second. However, IPA phonetic symbols are used more consistently throughout, the data in many examples and problems have been rechecked in the sources and corrected where necessary, and some of the references have been updated. Although some users might prefer a more extensive revision, I hope the present edition will help continue to fill the need for a text that is oriented to the student interested in interaction with data from previously unstudied or little studied languages.
