Il volume presenta i primi risultati dell’attività di ricerca, svolta attraverso una metodologia quali-quantitativa, nell’ambito del progetto “Open fields / Campagne Aperte: prevenire e combattere razzismo e xenofobia contro i lavoratori immigrati delle aree agricole del Sud Italia”, finanziato dalla Commissione Europea, attraverso il programma REC-Rights, Equality and Citizenship (2020-2021). La ricerca ha indagato gli effetti delle politiche e delle iniziative contro lo sfruttamento e per l’inclusione dei lavoratori stranieri in tre regioni italiane - Puglia, Calabrie e Sicilia - e in particolare in tre contesti specifici, che si configurano come enclave agroalimentari globali, in virtù dei modelli di produzione intensiva e di migrazione da lavoro connessi alle catene del valore strutturate nel sistema-mondo: la Capitanata, la Piana di Gioia Tauro e la fascia trasformata del ragusano.La sindemia da Covid-19 ha fatto scoprire come “essenziali”, all’interno del sistema agro-alimentare e delle dinamiche di riproduzione della società contemporanea, i lavoratori migranti, che tuttavia spesso permangono come “invisibili” all’interno dei contesti locali e del mercato del lavoro, per effetto delle politiche migratorie, di asilo e di mobilità, e a volte paradossalmente anche delle politiche e degli interventi di contrasto allo sfruttamento lavorativo e di inclusione sociale.

The Natural Border tells the recent history of Mediterranean rural capitalism from the perspective of marginalized Black African farm workers. Timothy Raeymaekers shows how in the context of global supply chains and repressive border regimes, agrarian production and reproduction are based on fundamental racial hierarchies. Taking the example of the tomato—a typical 'Made in Italy' commodity—Raeymaekers asks how political boundaries are drawn around the land and the labor needed for its production, what technologies of exclusion and inclusion enable capitalist operations to take place in the Mediterranean agrarian frontier, and which practices structure the allocation, use and commodification of land and labor across the tomato chain. While the mobile infrastructures that mobilize, channel, commodify and segregate labor play a central role in the 'naturalization' of racial segregation, they are also terrains of contestation and power—and thus, as The Natural Border demonstrates, reflect the tense socio-ecological transformation the Mediterranean border space is going through today.

Il mondo è sempre più diviso da confini, frontiere, faglie, muri. Molti di questi non sono così facilmente riconoscibili, sono linee invisibili, divisioni a volte tanto sottili da risultare quasi impercettibili, eppure separano e dividono. Con il geografo Maxim Samson andremo alla scoperta di molte di queste linee in modo sorprendente e originale. La superficie del nostro pianeta è segnata da innumerevoli confini. Alcuni sono naturali, altri sono legati all'opera dell'uomo, marcati da frontiere, muri e barriere. Accanto a questi, ne esistono molti altri che sono meno scontati e tanto sottili da risultare quasi invisibili. Sono quelle linee che separano, dividono, porzioni del nostro mondo a vari fini: dividono popoli, custodiscono identità e culture, sono capaci di generare tensioni e conflitti anche molto gravi. Il geografo Maxim Samson esplora trenta di queste linee invisibili: dalle correnti artiche o la 'cintura della malaria' a quelle che abbiamo segnato per circoscrivere gli effetti delle nostre azioni, come la 'zona rossa' di Černobyl o i cordoni sanitari del Covid.
