Quando nel 1927 Martin Heidegger pubblicò Essere e tempo, si ebbe subito la sensazione che un nuovo astro fosse sorto nel firmamento della filosofia. Da anni le sue lezioni – di cui Essere e tempo è il distillato – avevano richiamato intorno a quel giovane «sciamano del pensiero» un folto gruppo di allievi e ascoltatori. Ma con l’apparizione del capolavoro fu chiaro a tutti che Heidegger emanava davvero un’aura magica: era un pensatore capace di fare filosofia in grande stile. Adottando una terminologia nuova, a tratti ostica e cruda, con cui cercava di superare la crisi del linguaggio filosofico tradizionale, Heidegger riprende e radicalizza l’antico problema di Platone e Aristotele: il problema dell’essere. Ma nella sua palpitante interrogazione tale questione è riproposta in modo tutt’altro che erudito o astratto, riflettendosi in essa le inquietudini di un intero secolo: il venir meno del sentimento religioso, il tramonto della metafisica e la crisi delle ideologie, la fine dell’assoluto e il diffondersi del nichilismo, lo stridente contrasto tra una macchina moderna sempre più complessa e un uomo sempre più elementare. Essere e tempo ha così ispirato importanti correnti della filosofia, della teologia, della psichiatria del Novecento. E il continuo susseguirsi di nuove letture – che lo interpretano via via come bibbia dell’esistenzialismo, decostruzione dell’ontologia, parabola gnostica o versione moderna della filosofia pratica – non fa che confermarne l’incontestabile centralità e attualità, alimentando ulteriori interrogativi. Perché quest’opera rimase incompiuta? Qual è il segreto del suo inesauribile fascino? Che significato ha la «svolta» fra il primo e il secondo Heidegger? C’è continuità o rottura fra lo Heidegger «ermeneuta dell’esistenza» e quello che si proclama «pastore dell’essere»? Le risposte vanno cercate in questo libro, al quale sempre si è tornati e sempre si tornerà. La nuova edizione italiana approntata da Franco Volpi – rispettando nella terminologia la storica versione di Pietro Chiodi, ma adeguandola ai criteri richiesti da una ormai consolidata tradizione di studi e di rigore filologico – è corredata di cospicui apparati e riporta per la prima volta le Glosse manoscritte da Heidegger a margine della propria copia personale.
