“Es que soy de letras”. Esta excusa para disculparse a la hora de abordar un tema que incluye estadísticas no se corresponde ni con la trascendencia que éstas tienen en la actualidad ni con una práctica profesional y responsable del trabajo de periodistas y profesionales de la comunicación. La estadística es la ciencia que ofrece un retrato de una determinada realidad a partir del análisis y la interpretación de datos numéricos. La información que resulta de su aplicación permite tomar decisiones con un reducido margen de error, por lo que su uso se ha generalizado y ha pasado a formar parte de nuestra vida cotidiana. Por este motivo, tener conocimientos de estadística se ha convertido en una necesidad para un buen número de profesionales, entre ellos los de la comunicación, quienes continuamente deben manejar e interpretar multitud de datos procedentes de fuentes estadísticas. Esta obra permite acercarse de manera sencilla al análisis de cifras estadísticas y aclarar aquellas cuestiones que generan mayor confusión en la práctica profesional, es decir, la interpretación de porcentajes, los índices de audiencia, los diseños muestrales, las fichas técnicas y los resultados de encuestas.
