A segunda edição da obra “Direito, Economia e Sociedade” está carregada de acuidade acadêmica e de primazia. Convém realçar que os temas debatidos ao longo dessa segunda edição são atuais e refletem os dilemas enfrentados pela nossa sociedade. Foram abordados ao longo dos trezes capítulos, temáticas variadas, as quais privilegiam o exame de temas do senso comum e que, por vezes, deixam de estar entre as publicações de mais eloquência. Dentre essas temáticas, a generalização dos problemas econômico-sociais que amparam o direito continuam ser a tônica do interminável drama do homem, e elevam também as situações ocasionais do cotidiano como a perseguição da cidadania. À pena desenvolveu-se parágrafos de identificação social envolvendo as duas ciências de tônica: o direito e a economia e, daí abordou-se temáticas como a do cárcere e as normas do Estatuto do Idoso – Lei nº 10.741/2003. Em outro, questionou-se a função social do aprisionamento no Brasil e dos custos da detenção. A Lei nº 13.964, aprovada em 24 de dezembro de 2019, denominada de “Pacote Anticrime” foi objeto dessa obra, através de um exame sobre o juiz de garantias, o acordo de não-persecução penal, discussões sobre a justiça negocial no âmbito criminal, apenas lapsos para nossos leitores. Informa-se ao leitor que a questão ambiental recebeu trato específico, apresentando um estudo de caso o qual versa sobre o acordo de não persecução penal e o termo de ajustamento de conduta em um caso prático envolvendo o Ministério Público Estadual e o Município de Joca Claudino na nossa Paraíba, com o levante do “fim dos lixões”. Policing the Global South provides scholarship which further transnationalises and democratises ideas about policing practices and philosophies, highlighting renovations in approaches to policing studies, and injecting innovative perspectives into the study of policing from scholars positioned on the ‘periphery’. Criminological knowledge depolarisation underscores a conscious effort by scholars from the Global South to increase intellectual knowledge focused on developing context-specific responses to issues not aligned to Northern ideological positions and specific to the non-Northern context. Such shifts draw attention to the expanse of spaces beyond Northern centres rife with challenges unlike any specific to those experienced or conceptualised by scholars from the Global North with an applied Northern criminological lens. Applying a postcolonial lens to empirical knowledge from country-specific cases in former colonies in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, the Pacific, and Latin America, this book examines how policing issues not aligned to Northern ideological positions and specific to non-Northern contexts are addressed. The primary purpose is to share innovations in the field of policing – service provision, threats to security, crime responses, justice and international trends – developed in postcolonial developing-country contexts. Given the aim of the book and the contributors’ own research on issues of policing across the globe, it discusses themes including but not limited to the colonial legacies and their impact on policing; how plural regulatory systems and partnerships are navigated by the police; the linkages between access to justice, community perceptions, and police legitimacy; innovations and challenges in organisational reform, crime prevention, and community partnerships; and the expanding roles of police organisations in the Global South. While each chapter presents a policing issue in a country within a specific part of the Global South, the book highlights how important it is to frame responses based on contextual realities informed by an awareness of the past and present, with a goal of informing the future. Delivering a much-needed introduction to those specialising in policing in developing countries, this book is invaluable reading for academics and students of criminology, criminal justice, governance, policy, and IR, as well as professionals in policing organizations across the globe.

Black and Indigenous Resistance in the Americas is an essential roadmap to understanding contemporary racial politics across the Americas, where openly white supremacist politics are on the rise. It is the product of a multiyear, transnational research project by the Anti-racist Research and Action Network of the Americas in collaboration with resistance movements confronting racial retrenchment in Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, and the United States. How did we get here? And what anti-racist strategies are equal to the dire task of confronting resurgent racism? This volume provides powerful answers to these pressing questions. 1) It traces the making and contestation of state-led racial projects in response to black and indigenous mobilization during an era of expansion of multicultural rights in the context of neoliberal capitalism. 2) It identifies the origins and manifestations of the backlash against hard-fought (but hardly far-reaching) gains by marginalized peoples, showing that (contrary to critiques of “identity politics”) the losses and anxieties produced by the failures of neoliberalism have been understood in racial terms. 3) It distills a path forward for progressive anti-racist activism in the Americas that looks beyond state-centered, rights-seeking strategies and instead situates a critique of racial capitalism as central to the contestation of white supremacy.
