Siamo sempre più consapevoli che ogni paesaggio armonioso, vivibile, è una forma di equilibrio tra natura e cultura, tra ciò che è dato e ciò che è opera dell'uomo, e che quindi il paesaggio che troviamo bello può diventare un modello per quel giusto rapportotra naturale e artificiale che avvertiamo come ogni giorno più necessario, perché messo continuamente in pericolo. Come lavorare al mantenimento di questo difficile equilibrio? Innanzi tutto riflettendo sulla nozione di paesaggio, sulle categorie con le quali lo pensiamo e lo interpretiamo. In secondo luogo, rivisitando alcuni snodi storici fondamentali attraverso i quali si è formata l'idea moderna del paesaggio. Infine, mostrando in atto la compresenza di natura e storia attraverso la descrizione di alcuni luoghi paesaggistici esemplari, ad esempio nelle Puglie e nel Lazio. Perché ogni bel paesaggio italiano è un contesto stratificato, nel quale si legge il risultato di un rapporto non sempre facile, ma talvolta straordinariamente felice, dell'interazione dell'uomo con la natura in cui si è trovato a vivere.
