Muovendo da un’indagine sistematica sui canoni e i principi d’autorita classico-rinascimentali – la prospettiva, le proporzioni, l’idea – Panofsky ripercorre qui la vicenda delle diverse risposte date all’eterna questione del rapporto tra soggetto e oggetto dell’opera d’arte. Sulla scorta di un imponente apparato documentario, egli mostra come l’iconoclastia platonica lasci il posto alla valorizzazione medievale dell’immagine quale specchio della Bellezza divina, e come il Rinascimento colmi la frattura tra realta e invenzione con regole di composizione e prospettiva. Tra Manierismo e Classicismo, poi, torna a imporsi l’individualita dell’artista, che infonde nella propria creazione quell’Idea destinata a dare ordine e senso a un mondo oggettivo di per se privo di armonia: il suo intervento "purifica" la natura distillandola in opera. Secondo la formula di Panofsky, "l’arte ha sempre avuto il valore di una sorta di ponte gettato sull’abisso che separa la realta dall’Idea".
