The Andalusian Muslim philosopher Averroes (1126–1198) is known for his authoritative commentaries on Aristotle and for his challenging ideas about the relationship between philosophy and religion, and the place of religion in society. Among Jewish authors, he found many admirers and just as many harsh critics. This volume brings together, for the first time, essays investigating Averroes’s complex reception, in different philosophical topics and among several Jewish authors, with special attention to its relation to the reception of Maimonides.

"Brines's seven poetry collections offer a sustained inquiry into three fundamental philosophical themes: knowledge, the present moment, and non-being. These themes, however, are presented as conflictual differences. The numerous poetic voices heard throughout his poetry continually wrestle with knowledge perpetually oscillating with ignorance, the present moment unceasingly becoming past, and human existence endlessly displaying its own finitude. In this study, the critical interpretation of these themes leads to the critical exploration of language, the signifying process of language, and the warring forces of signification. The sign is thus viewed as a structure of difference and as such it endlessly displays the duplicitous nature of language engaged in a semantic struggle with itself."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Theory And History Of Ideological Production written by Rodríguez Gómez Rodríguez and has been published by University of Delaware Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002 with History categories.

To explain a text, according to Rodriguez, is to locate it precisley at a real historical conjuncture, to situate it ideologically. This insistence on the historicity of literature saved Rodriguez from the fate that, from the late 1970s onward, overtook many Althusserians. The latter, unable to historicise and therefore transcend the key category of the subject, refused to rank 'real art' among the ideologies, as a result of which their concept of literary 'production' remained locked in a Kantian- and therefore eminently bourgeois- problematic. For Rodriguez, in contrast, ideology could not be the discourse of the subject, for the simple reason that the subject was itself an historical category, whose origins were to be found in animism, the ideology of the bourgeoisie during its early, mercantilist phase. As an emergent ideology, animism stood in contradiction to substantialism, its dominant counterpart under feudalism, that manifestly had no place for a 'free subject'. The analysis of these conflictual ideologies, during the protracted transition in Spain from feudalism to capitalism, constitutes the kernel of Theory and History of Ideological Production.

Dracontius Orestes written by Paul Roche and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-12-30 with History categories.

This is the first English translation of Dracontius’ Orestes, a Latin poem from Vandal North Africa that tells the mythic story of the cycle of murder and vengeance suffered by the family of Agamemnon. This book provides the reader with a highly accurate and readable English translation of the Orestes, which is accessible for both scholarly and non-scholarly readers; it is accompanied by a full introduction and notes. The introduction discusses the literary, educational and rhetorical culture of Vandal North Africa, as well as the most important literary aspects of the Orestes including its major themes, the main literary influences upon it and its structure and style. Roche also includes a biography of Dracontius and examines the Orestes’ relationship to his other poetry, to his Christianity and to the Vandals. The notes explain all important allusions to earlier literature, they highlight themes and issues raised by each section of the poem, and they provide a comprehensive overview of each section of the work so that all readers can understand and appreciate the Orestes against the backdrop of ancient and late-antique literature. Dracontius’ Orestes is of interest to students and scholars of ancient literature, especially the Latin poetry of late antiquity, ancient epics, the reception of tragedy and comparative literature. It is also suitable for scholars of late antiquity and the general reader interested in the ancient world more broadly.
