Thomas Kaufmann, the leading European scholar of the Reformation, argues that the main motivations behind the Reformation rest in religion itself. The Reformation began far from Europe's traditional political, economic, and cultural power centres, and yet it threw the whole continent into turmoil. There has been intense speculation over the last century focusing on the political and social causes that lay at the root of this revolution. Thomas Kaufmann, one of the world's leading experts on the Reformation, sees the most important drivers for what happened in religion itself. The reformers were principally concerned with the question of salvation. It could all have ended with the pope's condemnation of Luther and his teaching. But Luther believed the pope was condemned to eternal damnation, and this was the root cause of the great split to come. Hatred of the damned drove people to take up arms, while countless numbers left their homes far behind and carried the Reformation message to the furthest corners of the earth in the hope of salvation. In The Saved and the Damned, Thomas Kaufmann presents a dramatic overview of how Europe was transformed by the seismic shock of the Reformation—and of how its aftershocks reverberate right down to the present day.

Die Politischen Systeme Der Baltischen Staaten written by Michèle Knodt and has been published by Springer-Verlag this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-07-20 with Political Science categories.

[Johannes Block. The Pomeranian Reformer and his Library] Johannes Block, reformer of Barth, Pomerania, has to be counted among the most important figures of the early Reformation in north-eastern Europe. Since he left no writings of his own, little is known of his life and impact. But we can trace Block's biography by means of his private library donated by him to the Church Library of St. Mary's at Barth. With regard to this collection we are able to identify a singular life characterized by spiritual recommencements on the one hand and several strokes of fate on the other. As a humanist and itinerant preacher, Block left his native country, Lower Pomerania, about the year 1510, and worked in Livonia and Finland. On his return to Pomerania he took part in the Prince's Reformation organized by the Wittenberg Lutheran Bugenhagen (1534). This publication gives insight into the socio-historical roots of Block's activities, compiling papers discussed by an international group of scholars at the Barth Bible Centre in 2015. Furthermore, Block's itinerant preacher's library is made accessible by a scholarly catalogue for the first time. Thus, Block's book collection can be rediscovered as a unique treasure of the first generation of reformists.
