Genova occupa una posizione particolare, rispetto ad altre città italiane, poiché esprime inerzie e resistenze nei confronti dei cambiamenti anche quando li desidera e li invoca e, al tempo stesso, ha messo in atto processi di trasformazione che per certi versi la trascendono e per altri ne vedono il ruolo attivo. Negli ultimi quarant’anni la città è cambiata profondamente. Le ragioni e i limiti di questo cambiamento sono legati alla sua storia e alla sua posizione, alle caratteristiche del sito e dei caratteri geografico-fisici dell’ambiente, alle strategie politiche e amministrative, alle scelte economiche e agli atteggiamenti dei cittadini. Certo il sito è tuttora riconoscibile, ma il porto commerciale si è esteso a ponente, il profilo della città è stato segnato da nuovi grattacieli; intere aree industriali sono state dismesse e, alcune, rioccupate con finalità diverse; il waterfront centrale ha subito una metamorfosi drastica; strutture di ricerca di rilevanza internazionale come l’Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia si sono insediate. Oggi la rigenerazione urbana ha un simbolo nel nuovo ponte “Genova – San Giorgio”, progettato da Renzo Piano, ma guarda anche al Centro Storico e alle periferie. Le trasformazioni non hanno toccato solo la morfologia urbana ma anche le strutture sociali ed economiche, la qualità e gli stili di vita, facendo di Genova, a partire dagli anni Ottanta un “caso” di studio per chi si occupa di sviluppo urbano come esempio di una città che mostra di sapere convertire alcune sue criticità in elementi di trasformazione positiva.
