Sabemos que nació hacia hacia 325 y murió hacia 265 a.C., y que vivió en Alejandría durante el reinado de Ptolomeo I Sóter. El resto de noticias relacionadas con él son conjeturas; se ha llegado a suponer que no fue el autor efectivo de las obras a él atribuidas sino el director de un grupo de estudiosos alejandrinos, e incluso que el nombre no correspondió a una persona real, sino a un equipo de matemáticos que lo adoptó colectivamente. Sea como fuera, la obra principal de Euclides son los Elementos, uno de los tratados científicos más célebres del mundo. Se trata de un compendio de geometría que engloba todo el saber de su tiempo acerca de esta disciplina: más que una obra repleta de conocimientos originales y novedosos, es una brillante síntesis y sistematización de cuestiones ya existentes; es, pues, en la reunión y exposición de los materiales donde hay que situar su virtud. La geometría euclidiana es aquella que estudia las propiedades del plano y el espacio tridimensional. Se ha mostrado tan válida que sus teoremas todavía se imparten hoy en las escuelas, y hay algunos tan arraigados en el acervo común, como el celebérrimo teorema de Pitágoras, que las conocen hasta los legos en geometría.
