This investigation is about a distinguished figure in the Portuguese Musical context of the twentieth century, which so far have not attracted the interest she deserves, although mentioned in dictionaries, encyclopedias as well as some newspaper articles published throughout her career or posthumously. Germaine Francine Benoit Van Gool, was born on July 30, of 1894 in Périgueux, France; daughter of Paul Benoit, French, and, Victorine Marie Van Gool, belgian. She arrived in Portugal in 1906 (at the age of 12). She acquired Portuguese nationality at age of 35. Therefore, we can say that throughout her life, which as noted was quite long, has developed a multifaced and remarkable activity in music field. She worked as a teacher, educator, composer, lecturer, music critic, columnist and activist women, recognized by hers contemporaries due to her character and uniqueness. Francine Benoit was an isolated figure who backed up the story of Portuguese art, and musical perspective, introducing some essential aspect of musical practice in the twentieth century, unknown to us at the time; starting from an assumption that was urgent to eliminate gaps that exists in the Portuguese music History, and also essential to inform about figures of ideological sense and outstanding quality in portuguese culture.

This book explores women’s editorial and salon activities in Southern Europe and provides a comparative view of their practices. It argues that women in Spain, Italy, Portugal and Greece used their double role as editors and salonnières to engage with foreign cultures, launch the careers of promising young authors and advocate for modernization and social change. By examining a neglected body of periodicals edited between 1860 and 1920, this book sets out to explore women’s editorial agendas and their interest in creating a connection between salon life and the print press. What purpose did this connection serve? How did women editors use their periodicals and their salons to create opportunities for cross-cultural exchange? In what ways did women use their double role as editors and salonnières to promote modernization and social progress in Southern Europe? By addressing these questions, this monograph contributes to the recent expansion of scholarship on nineteenth and twentieth-century periodicals and opens new avenues for theoretical reflection on European modernity. It also invites scholars and non-specialist readers to question the center vs. periphery model and to consider Southern European counties as cultural hubs in their own right.

The Bassoon written by James B. Kopp and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-01-01 with Music categories.

This welcome volume encompasses the entire history of the bassoon, from its origins five centuries ago to its place in twenty-first-century music. James Kopp draws on new archival research and many years' experience playing the instrument to provide an up-to-date and lively portrait of today's bassoon and its intriguing predecessors. He discusses the bassoon's makers, its players, its repertory, its myths, and its audiences, all in unprecedented detail. The bassoon was invented in Italy in response to the need for a bass-register double-reed woodwind suitable for processionals and marching. Composers were quick to exploit its agility and unique timbre. Later, during the reign of Louis XIV, the instrument underwent a major redesign, giving voice to its tenor register. In the early 1800s new scientific precepts propelled a wave of invention and design modifications. In the twentieth century, the multiplicity of competing bassoon designs narrowed to a German (or Heckel) type and a French type, the latter now nearly extinct. The author examines the acoustical consequences of these various redesigns. He also offers new coverage of the bassoon's social history, including its roles in the military and church and its global use during the European Colonial period. Separate historical chapters devoted to contrabassoons and smaller bassoons complete the volume [Publisher description].
