Daniel (hebreo: דָּנִיּאֵל), el nombre de Daniel significa "El que es juzgado por Dios" o "Dios ha juzgado así", o "Dios (El) es mi juez". También llamado Beltsasar, era un joven príncipe judío tomado como prisionero de guerra por las tropas del imperio babilónico en medio de la rebelión por la independencia de Judá. Sirvió al rey Nabucodonosor II y a sus sucesores con lealtad y competencia hasta la conquista de Babilonia por Ciro el Grande, y gracias a la sabiduría de su Dios, Jehová, interpretó los sueños y visiones de los reyes, convirtiéndose en una figura prominente en la corte babilónica.No se le considera un profeta en el judaísmo, pero los rabinos lo consideraban el miembro más distinguido de la diáspora babilónica, insuperable en piedad y buenas acciones, firme en su adhesión a la Ley a pesar de estar rodeado de enemigos que buscaban su caída. Daniel es considerado un profeta en el cristianismo, y aunque no se le menciona en el Corán, las fuentes musulmanas lo califican de profeta.El Libro de Daniel fue escrito en una época en la que los judíos eran oprimidos y perseguidos por los pueblos paganos. El libro se denomina "apocalíptico" porque trata de acontecimientos relacionados con el fin del mundo (véase Rev. Intr.). Estos acontecimientos se revelan al profeta a través de visiones y sueños (capítulos 7-12). El profeta trata de explicar al pueblo de Dios por qué es perseguido y, al mismo tiempo, le insta a ser fiel a Dios. Porque llegará el día en que Dios pondrá fin al dominio de los gentiles, y una vez más Israel será una nación libre e independiente.
