El prefacio ya ha indicado brevemente cuál es el objeto de la ciencia textual. Este primer capítulo examina el posicionamiento de la ciencia textual en relación con otras disciplinas y los fenómenos, problemas y tareas más específicos de la investigación científica textual. En el último capítulo se prestará atención sistemática a los diversos subcampos de la ciencia textual. El término ciencia textual es nuevo en los Países Bajos, pero se conoce en el extranjero, especialmente en la República Federal de Alemania, desde hace unos diez años como 'Textwissenschaft', 'science du texte' o 'análisis del discurso'. No obstante, especialmente en los estudios de lenguas, estamos familiarizados con conceptos como el análisis de textos y la interpretación de textos, aunque en esos casos la atención se centra principalmente en la descripción concreta de textos, especialmente literarios. La ciencia textual tiene un carácter más general y comprensivo: por un lado tiene componentes tanto teóricos como descriptivos y aplicados, mientras que por otro lado se relaciona con todo tipo de textos y sus contextos. La ciencia textual también tiene que ver con fenómenos y problemas que también se abordan en parte en otras ciencias o cursos de estudio, en primer lugar la lingüística general y el dominio del idioma (este último como parte de los estudios holandeses), luego los estudios literarios y la ciencia del estilo. y finalmente la psicología y las ciencias sociales, especialmente la comunicación de masas. En las ciencias sociales en particular, existe un método de investigación, a saber, el análisis de contenido, que también entraría en el ámbito de un estudio de texto interdisciplinario. Lo mismo se aplica a los llamados. Conversación y análisis conversacional en psiquiatría, psicoterapia, sociología (en el contexto de la llamada 'etnometología') y desde hace algunos años también en lingüística.

When the first European missionaries arrived on other continents, it was decided that the indigenous languages would be used as the means of christianization. There emerged the need to produce grammars and dictionaries of those languages. Text-based interaction among humans connected via computer networks, such as takes place via email and in synchronous modes such as chat, MUDs and MOOs, has attracted considerable popular and scholarly attention. This collection of 14 articles on text-based computer-mediated communication (CMC), is the first to bring empirical evidence from a variety of disciplinary perspectives to bear on questions raised by the new medium.The first section, linguistic perspectives, addresses the question of how CMC compares with speaking and writing, and describes its unique structural characteristics. Section two, on social and ethical perspectives, explores conflicts between the interests of groups and those of individual users, including issues of online sex and sexism. In the third section, cross-cultural perspectives, the advantages and risks of using CMC to communicate across cultures are examined in three studies involving users in East Asia, Mexico, and students of ethnically diverse backgrounds in remedial writing classes in the United States. The final section deals with the effects of CMC on group interaction: in a women s studies mailing list, a hierarchically-organized workplace, and a public protest on the Internet against corporate interests.
