Over the past decade, interest in language teacher education and professionalization programs has increased significantly mainly due to global educational reforms, which have been driven by internationalization, multilingualism, the rise of new literacy and the incorporation of technologies. These reforms, based on the challenges of knowledge societies and networks, have created the need to re-evaluate and reconceptualize teacher training and teacher professional development as a "fundamental connection to teaching" (Bryant et al., 2008; Vélaz de Medrano & Vaillant, 2009; Espinosa, 2012; Johnson and Golombeck, 2018). The main objective is, then, to “prepare the new generations within an increasingly uncertain and demanding global scenario” (Pérez Ruíz, 2014, p 114). This publication addresses work on the education of language teachers in a variety of sociocultural, educational and institutional contexts carried out in Mexico and Latin America with various methodological designs and approaches from different theoretical perspectives. Therefore, in the context of current challenges, we seek to promote the exchange, discussions of experience and results of research and reflection that can influence the direction and implementation of language policies regarding teacher education and teacher professionalization for language teaching.

Prólogo El Cider en sus cuarenta años: testimonio de un pasado con futuro Me sorprendió y me halagó el que los profesores Javier Pineda Duque y Bert Helmsing me invitaran a escribir algunas reflexiones sobre el Cider, con ocasión de la publicación de documentos que relatan su evolución en cuatro décadas, por algunos de quienes tienen el justo reconocimiento de haber sido protagonistas de su historia o continúan relacionados con su construcción. Mi vinculación con esta realización ha sido marginal. Ocurrió durante la expansión de la Facultad de Ingeniería de la Universidad de los Andes. En 1966, el Gobierno de los Países Bajos aceptó la propuesta de la Facultad de apoyarla en el mejoramiento de sus facilidades de docencia e investigación, especialmente con el uso de modelos físicos en los campos de la hidráulica y la hidrología. Para el efecto, el rector de la Universidad, Ramón de Zubiría, firmó un convenio de cooperación con la Dirección de Asistencia Técnica Internacional del Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores del Reino de los Países Bajos. Gracias a la idoneidad de los expertos de este país que vinieron a trabajar en la Universidad de los Andes y de los colombianos que se vincularon como investigadores y estudiantes al proyecto, su realización fue extraordinariamente exitosa y contribuyó a estrechar las relaciones entre los dos países y a incrementar el intercambio de investigadores y de conocimientos.
