El segundo volumen de "Estudios de arte contemporáneo" reúne una antología de textos sobre pintura y escultura españolas. El primero analiza los problemas planteados en torno al noventa y ocho; el último, la obra de Adolfo Schlosser. Darío de Regoyos, Solana, el cubismo de entreguerras y la renovación artística en España, Julio González, Miró, Tàpies y Saura son algunos de los temas objeto de estudio. En ellos se perciben tanto los cambios habidos como la rica complejidad de nuestro arte, su originalidad y su cosmopolitismo. La historia del arte español del siglo XX es compleja y en ocasiones traumática. Compleja en su diversidad, traumática en sus crisis, producidas muchas veces por acontecimientos históricos que, como la Guerra Civil y la posguerra, sacudieron nuestra vida cultural y artística, la sofocaron. Traumática y compleja, también, en la crisis latente que, durante muchos años, más de los que fueran deseables, constituye el horizonte de la actividad artística. Ahora bien, estas circunstancias históricas no han impedido el cosmopolitismo de nuestro arte y artistas mejores, su presencia en la evolución del arte europeo, una fuerte influencia en el mismo. Incluso aquellos momentos que, como el noventa y ocho, suelen comprenderse en términos de una presunta entidad española. También en sus momentos reina la complejidad y la diversidad, y la pretensión de modernidad es deseo, cumplido, de las tendencias que una historia limitada reduce al nacionalismo. Incluso en la represión de la posguerra miran nuestros artistas hacia lo que se hace fuera y conectan directamente con ello en la oposición y resistencia a lo que sucede dentro. La nuestra no es una historia simple, así procuran ponerlo de manifiesto los estudios aquí reunidos.
