The articles in this volume of ARCHIMEDES examine particular cases of `reception' in ways that emphasize pressing historiographical and methodological issues. Such issues arise in any consideration of the transmission and appropriation of scientific concepts and practices that originated in the several `centers' of European learning, subsequently to appear (often in considerably altered guise) in regions at the European periphery. They discuss the transfer of new scientific ideas, the mechanisms of their introduction, and the processes of their appropriation at the periphery. The themes that frame the discussions of the complex relationship between the origination of ideas and their reception include the ways in which the ideas of the Scientific Revolution were introduced, the particularities of their expression in each place, the specific forms of resistance encountered by these new ideas, the extent to which such expression and resistance displays national characteristics, the procedures through which new ways of dealing with nature were made legitimate, and the commonalities and differences between the methods developed by scholars for handling scientific issues.

This book scrutinizes literary works based on Judaism, Jews and their descendants, written or printed by the Portuguese, from the forced conversion of Jews in 1497, until the ending of the distinction between New and Old Christians in 1773. It tries to understand what motivated this vast literary production, its different currents, and how they evolved. Additionally, it studies the image of New Christians and seeks the reasons for the perpetuation of this perception of Jewish descendants in the Early Modern Portuguese world. The Imaginary Synagogue seeks to identify which Jews and which ‘synagogue’ those authors constructed in their texts and their reasons for doing so, and offers conclusions on the self-affirmed Catholic importance of this literary current.

A educação racional coloca-se no núcleo da afirmação utópica do anarquismo; acena como instrumento nas práticas de liberação da consciência. Utópica quanto à transformação radical da vida, instaurando a liberdade enquanto "construção eminentemente social". A educação libertária, tem em sua formulação mais teórica, as experiências desenvolvidas por Francisco Ferrer Y Guardia, tendo sido reconhecidas como o "coroamento prático de todo desenvolvimento teórico que se fez no seio do movimento libertário". Talvez, a perspectiva que mais se deva destacar nessa "pedagogia anarquista", seja o conceito de liberdade, encarada não como propõe a filosofia política burguesa, na qual a liberdade é um fato natural, cumprindo à sociedade organizar-se de modo a permitir a liberdade de todos através das leis. A liberdade para os anarquistas é um fato social, não faz parte do homem; deve ser construída pela comunidade. A educação e a instrução são fundamentais para a conquista dessa liberdade, assumindo a importante tarefa de "desalienação, de destruição da ideologia da dominação e de criação de uma nova mentalidade revolucionária". Supõe, portanto, a vivência de relações solidárias e de vivência autônoma. A escola deve ser "um centro onde seja disseminada a verdade e onde a ciência, construída por todos, deve ser igualmente distribuída entre todos". O conhecimento é instrumento de luta não só para a construção de uma outra ordem social, mas é também, e talvez principalmente, para resistir a uma ordem que objetivamente cada vez mais afasta as possibilidades de emancipação.
