Os textos apresentados correspondem às comunicações do seminário internacional “Estados autoritários e totalitários e suas representações”, realizado em Coimbra em Novembro de 2008. Foi mais um espaço de debate sobre um tema que, na sua linha básica — “Estados autoritários e totalitários” —, já foi abordado, noutras perspetivas, por esta equipa de investigação e por outros historiadores em Bolonha e S. Paulo. A ideia que presidiu a este encontro foi sobretudo a de pensar os projetos totalitários e autoritários tal como foram vistos pelas suas testemunhas e atores, pelas imagens políticas que se formaram ou pela sua historiografia, considerando que a História também interroga as memórias, os escritos políticos e didáticos de época ou a escrita da história. Os seus coordenadores optaram por apresentar estes textos na língua e na forma que os autores lhes deram, com os seus critérios próprios, sem intervirem fundamentalmente no sentido de uma uniformização. Se, assim, se perde em termos de uniformidade editorial, ganha-se — julga-se — na espontaneidade, completando assim um colóquio aberto à comunidade, que pretendeu ser o mais possível um seminário de debate.
