A comprehensive study of the New Christian elite of Jewish origin--prominent traders, merchants, bankers and men of letters--between the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries The New Christian elite of Jewish origin were at the forefront of early modern globalisation from the fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries. Either forced to convert to Christianity or descended from those who were, these Iberian traders, merchants, and bankers with links to the academic world and liberal professions played a pivotal role in intercontinental trade for two centuries--only to decline, and virtually disappear as an ethnic elite, by the mid-1700s. In Strangers Within, Francisco Bethencourt offers a comprehensive study of the New Christian trading elite, describing their many achievements, innovations and migrations. Members of this new elite were instrumental in opening global trade, investing in plantations and industries and loaning money to kings, popes, cardinals, noblemen and religious orders. They lived under constant threat of the Inquisition for almost three hundred years, yet most of them stayed in the Iberian world. Others departed to create Sephardic communities in north Africa, the Ottoman Empire, northern Europe and the Americas. Drawing on new research in archives and research libraries in Lisbon, Madrid, Seville, Simancas, Rome, Florence, Antwerp, London and Lima, Bethencourt traces the international networks New Christian trading elite families built, the different religious allegiances they assumed and the wide range of places in which they carried on their business activities. He describes the prominent roles they played in Iberian and European culture: Saint Teresa de Avila had a New Christian background, as did the philosopher Spinoza. Despite their prominence, after three centuries, the New Christians disappeared as a recognizable ethnicity, finally bowing under the accumulated weight of racism and persecution.

O presente estudo centra-se nos conhecimentos, atitudes e práticas relativamente ao Planeamento Familiar revelados por mulheres timorenses residentes em Portugal. No enquadramento teórico, aborda-se o Planeamento Familiar na sua globalidade, Timor-Leste nos seus diversos aspectos, e a comunidade timorense residente em Portugal. Trata-se de um estudo de carácter exploratório e descritivo, tendo sido utilizada uma metodologia de natureza qualitativa. Foi seleccionada a entrevista semi-estruturada como instrumento de recolha de dados relativos à população em estudo, que consistiu numa amostra intencional de vinte mulheres timorenses. A análise de conteúdo foi o processo utilizado na análise dos dados. Após ter sido feita a caracterização da população em estudo, procurou-se estabelecer um paralelo entre a situação vivida em Timor-Leste e a que passou a verificar-se após a sua vinda de Timor para Portugal, relativamente ao Planeamento Familiar. Para finalizar, procedeu-se à análise das percepções sobre o aborto. Ao longo da análise, houve simultaneamente recurso à literatura sobre o tema e a informações obtidas por intermédio de informadores privilegiados. As principais conclusões a que se chegou foram as seguintes: • As características culturais, bem como as circunstâncias em que as mulheres timorenses se encontram após terem vindo para Portugal, influenciam as suas atitudes em relação à fecundidade. • Os filhos são muito valorizados pelas mulheres timorenses, sendo quatro o número médio de filhos desejados. A mudança de meio cultural, o acesso a mais informação, a entrada no mundo do trabalho e as dificuldades económicas que se fazem sentir em Portugal são os motivos que levam a que este número seja limitado. • As mulheres timorenses estão mais informadas e recorrem mais ao Planeamento Familiar após a sua vinda para Portugal. Em Timor-Leste a falta de informação; a oposição, por parte da Igreja católica, à utilização de métodos contraceptivos que não os naturais; a iliteracia; a residência em meio rural e o medo do programa de Planeamento Familiar indonésio constituíam limitações ou obstáculos ao Planeamento Familiar. • O programa de Planeamento Familiar indonésio foi considerado coercivo, indo contra os direitos humanos. Foi acusado de ter como objectivo a exterminação do povo timorense por via da contenção da reprodução. Tal seria, ainda, coadjuvado pelo processo de transmigração de indonésios para o território timorense. • A importância do Planeamento Familiar é atribuída aos benefícios económicos e para a saúde que confere, bem como ao facto de permitir maior disponibilidade e atenção prestadas aos filhos. • A maioria das entrevistadas teve gravidezes não planeadas, devidas à falta de informações sobre contracepção e à falha ou interrupção dos métodos contraceptivos utilizados. Consequências negativas atribuídas a certos métodos levaram, em certas situações, a essa interrupção. • Há, no geral, partilha das decisões relativas ao Planeamento Familiar com o parceiro. • São conhecidos e utilizados, em Portugal, mais métodos contraceptivos do que em Timor. • A interrupção voluntária da gravidez é conhecida, em Timor e em Portugal, bem como alguns dos processos utilizados para esse fim. Algumas mulheres confirmam a prática do aborto forçado por parte dos indonésios. • A interrupção voluntária da gravidez é, em geral, desaprovada por questões de ordem religiosa e moral, sendo aprovada apenas em situações específicas.
