At the crossroad of intellectual, diplomatic, and cultural history, this book examines flows of information, men, and ideas between South American cities—mainly the port-capitals of Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro—during the period of their modernization. The book reconstructs this largely overlooked trend toward connectedness both as an objective process and as an assemblage of visions and policies concentrating on diverse transnational practices such as translation, travel, public visits and conferences, the print press, cultural diplomacy, intertextuality, and institutional and personal contacts. Inspired by the entangled history approach and the spatial turn in the humanities, the book highlights the importance of cross-border exchanges within the South American continent. It thus offers a correction to two major traditions in the historiography of ideas and identities in modern Latin America: the predominance of the nation-state as the main unit of analysis, and the concentration on relationships with Europe and the U.S. as the main axis of cultural exchange. Modernization, it is argued, brought segments of South America’s capital cities not only close to Paris, London, and New York, as is commonly claimed, but also to each other both physically and mentally, creating and recreating spaces, ways of thinking, and cultural-political projects at the national and regional levels.

Las formas de hacer política en el México del siglo XIX eran de lo más diversas y no siempre tuvieron el mismo peso. Incluyeron desde la interacción personal apoyada en las redes sociales más tradicionales hasta la acción asociativa; desde la arenga pronunciada en la plaza pública o el sermón en el púlpito, hasta los agudos debates parlamentarios; desde los corrillos formados en palacio hasta la movilización callejera; y desde los coloquios organizados en torno al café, la tertulia y el gabiente de lectura hasta el pronunciamiento militar. Pero entre estas maneras de hacerse oír, de negociar, de dirigir o de gestionar, la prensa periódica y las elecciones tuvieron un lugar central a lo largo de todo el siglo. El presente libro se acerca a estas dos formas de hacer política y se interesa particularmente por la relación tejida entre ambas. Porque la prensa periódica constituyó no sólo parte medular del sistema de información impresa del México moderno; también fue foro de múltiples opiniones y debates, lugar de definición de lenguajes y proyectos, escuela de lectores y espacio de luchas por posiciones de mando. Junto con logias, facciones y partidos, los periódicos articularon a la sociedad política y participaron en las pugnas por los repartos de poder. Como tales, junto a los comicios —condición de posibilidad de todo gobierno representativo y centro de la arena pública decimonónica—, se erigieron en componentenes fundamentales de la política de la época. Y ambos se encuentran tan estrechamente imbricados en el escenario político de entonces que podemos afirmar que, en el México del siglo XIX, se construyó una maquinaria electoral estrechamente ligada a la acción periodística.
