Objectif: produire des matériaux de couverture en amiante-ciment bon marché et en grande série. Cette firme, par l'absorption de concurrents, par l'implantation sur le marché des tubes et une stratégie commerciale agressive, acquiert rapidement un leadership. Les années 1955-1975 sont euphoriques, la demande, suscitée, est effrénée. Le territoire national est quadrillé par de nouvelles usines, la productivité et la pénétration outre-mer et dans le tiers monde sont poussées au maximum. Dès le départ, cette réussite est fondée sur un matériau dont la nocivité est connue depuis la fin du XIXe siècle: l'amiante. Pendant des décennies, l'entreprise détruit le capital humain. Actuellement, l'amiante cause en France 10 décès par jour, 3 000 par an; 100 000 sont à prévoir d'ici 2025, une hécatombe à laquelle participe largement l'Eternit française. A l'aide d'archives, de la presse économique, de témoignages, ce livre interroge pour la première fois le processus de domination d'une branche, les tests de la rentabilité capitaliste, les techniques, les métiers d'une industrie de la mort, la progression des maladies d'Eternit. L'amiante n'est interdit en France qu'en 1997, après 20 ans d'attente, en Europe qu'en 2005. Un problème capital est posé: que vaut la vie humaine au regard du profit?

In the early twentieth century, asbestos had a reputation as a lifesaver. In 1960, however, it became known that even relatively brief exposure to asbestos can cause mesothelioma, a virulent and lethal cancer. Yet the bulk of the world's asbestos was mined after 1960. Asbestos usage in many countries continued unabated. This is the first global history of how the asbestos industry and its allies in government, insurance, and medicine defended the product throughout the twentieth century. It explains how mining and manufacture could continue despite overwhelming medical evidence as to the risks. The argument advanced in this book is that asbestos has proved so enduring because the industry was able to mount a successful defense strategy for the mineral - a strategy that still operates in some parts of the world. This defence involved the shaping of the public debate by censoring, and sometimes corrupting, scientific research, nurturing scientific uncertainty, and using allies in government, insurance, and medicine. The book also discusses the problems of asbestos in the environment, compensating victims, and the continued use of asbestos in the developing world. Its global focus shows how asbestos can be seen as a model for many occupational diseases - indeed for a whole range of hazards produced by industrial societies. The book is based on a wealth of documentary material gained from legal discovery, supplemented by evidence from the authors' visits and researches in the US, the UK, Canada, Kazakhstan, Zimbabwe, Australia, Swaziland, and South Africa.

The trajectories of pollution in global capitalism, from the toxic waste of early tanneries to the poisonous effects of pesticides in the twentieth century. Through the centuries, the march of economic progress has been accompanied by the spread of industrial pollution. As our capacities for production and our aptitude for consumption have increased, so have their byproducts—chemical contamination from fertilizers and pesticides, diesel emissions, oil spills, a vast “plastic continent” found floating in the ocean. The Contamination of the Earth offers a social and political history of industrial pollution, mapping its trajectories over three centuries, from the toxic wastes of early tanneries to the fossil fuel energy regime of the twentieth century. The authors describe how, from 1750 onward, in contrast to the early modern period, polluted water and air came to be seen as inevitable side effects of industrialization, which was universally regarded as beneficial. By the nineteenth century, pollutants became constituent elements of modernity. The authors trace the evolution of these various pollutions, and describe the ways in which they were simultaneously denounced and permitted. The twentieth century saw new and massive scales of pollution: chemicals that resisted biodegradation, including napalm and other defoliants used as weapons of war; the ascendancy of oil; and a lifestyle defined by consumption. In the 1970s, pollution became a political issue, but efforts—local, national, and global—to regulate it often fell short. Viewing the history of pollution though a political lens, the authors also offer lessons for the future of the industrial world.
