Almost all the existing modern systems of Ethics deal with formal definitions, and at bottom repeat more or less the same thing about them in slightly different words. In this work these are a side issue, and therefore are treated briefly. Their treatment in Section I is based upon the author’s theoretical works the Theory of Order and the Theory of Reality, but will be intelligible to those who are not acquainted with those works. The chief concern is moral teaching – that is, the practical element.

Ethics underpin all aspects of nursing activity but the concepts can often seem remote or inaccessible. This refreshing new book will help nurses explore and explain key aspects of ethical nursing practice in a practical and engaging way. Using plentiful examples and case studies, this book focuses on showing readers how to apply ethical principles to everyday nursing practice and deliver excellent care as a result. The book explores and helps answer questions such as: What are rights? What is dignity? How are nurses accountable? How does the law relate to ethics? What is a dignified death? The authors have created a set of fictional characters who experience various healthcare dilemmas and scenarios, and appear throughout the book. These characters help illustrate different aspects of ethics in healthcare and bring ethical concepts and decision making to life. This book is essential reading for nurses preparing to qualify or those already qualified and doing further study. "This is an ideal introductory text for students of nursing and other allied health professions because it is written in an accessible style. The authors discuss key ethical theories and principles but make them meaningful by applying them to contemporary scenarios in healthcare. They encourage the reader to examine their own beliefs and values and consider how these can impact on their own professional judgment and decision making." Melanie Fisher LLM (Medical Law), Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader, Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, Northumbria University, UK "This is a very readable textbook that deals with the fundamentals of healthcare ethics for nurses. Starting with an introduction to the issues underpinning ethical knowledge, such as values and beliefs, it then leads into ethical concepts such as rights, dignity and accountability and concludes with specific areas of practice, such as dignified death and research. As such it would be useful reading to support an undergraduate programme introducing students to ethical theory. The use of '"think boxes'" and short exercises is particularly useful in ensuring that theory can be contextualised and made sense of by the student in real-life scenarios. Academic staff may find these useful as activities to use in workshops with students." Deborah C. Casey, Senior Lecturer in Nursing, Leeds Metropolitan University, UK "I believe strongly that there needs to be much greater understanding of moral nursing practice particularly at a time when there has been much negative press regarding poor and undignified patient care, along with a failure by nurses to advocate for the frail and vulnerable. Education requires appropriate materials to enable those learning about nursing and health care. This text succeeds in providing clear explanations of ethics for nurses in relatively plain English that will enable the essentials of moral caring behaviour. The reader is encouraged to engage with ethical concepts and principles through ‘think boxes’, ‘points for consideration’ and the ‘residents of Oak Avenue’ that facilitate linking theory to practice. Overall the reader is guided from one subject to the next through each chapter in a logical manner that gives a useful perspective to understanding the essentials for moral nursing practice." Linnette King, Principal Lecturer, Faculty of Health and Social Science, University of Brighton, UK

PREFACE. THE Author of this very practical treatise on Scotch Loch - Fishing desires clearly that it may be of use to all who had it. He does not pretend to have written anything new, but to have attempted to put what he has to say in as readable a form as possible. Everything in the way of the history and habits of fish has been studiously avoided, and technicalities have been used as sparingly as possible. The writing of this book has afforded him pleasure in his leisure moments, and that pleasure would be much increased if he knew that the perusal of it would create any bond of sympathy between himself and the angling community in general. This section is interleaved with blank shects for the readers notes. The Author need hardly say that any suggestions addressed to the case of the publishers, will meet with consideration in a future edition. We do not pretend to write or enlarge upon a new subject. Much has been said and written-and well said and written too on the art of fishing but loch-fishing has been rather looked upon as a second-rate performance, and to dispel this idea is one of the objects for which this present treatise has been written. Far be it from us to say anything against fishing, lawfully practised in any form but many pent up in our large towns will bear us out when me say that, on the whole, a days loch-fishing is the most convenient. One great matter is, that the loch-fisher is depend- ent on nothing but enough wind to curl the water, -and on a large loch it is very seldom that a dead calm prevails all day, -and can make his arrangements for a day, weeks beforehand whereas the stream- fisher is dependent for a good take on the state of the water and however pleasant and easy it may be for one living near the banks of a good trout stream or river, it is quite another matter to arrange for a days river-fishing, if one is looking forward to a holiday at a date some weeks ahead. Providence may favour the expectant angler with a good day, and the water in order but experience has taught most of us that the good days are in the minority, and that, as is the case with our rapid running streams, -such as many of our northern streams are, -the water is either too large or too small, unless, as previously remarked, you live near at hand, and can catch it at its best. A common belief in regard to loch-fishing is, that the tyro and the experienced angler have nearly the same chance in fishing, -the one from the stern and the other from the bow of the same boat. Of all the absurd beliefs as to loch-fishing, this is one of the most absurd. Try it. Give the tyro either end of the boat he likes give him a cast of ally flies he may fancy, or even a cast similar to those which a crack may be using and if he catches one for every three the other has, he may consider himself very lucky. Of course there are lochs where the fish are not abundant, and a beginner may come across as many as an older fisher but we speak of lochs where there are fish to be caught, and where each has a fair chance. Again, it is said that the boatman has as much to do with catching trout in a loch as the angler. Well, we dont deny that. In an untried loch it is necessary to have the guidance of a good boatman but the same argument holds good as to stream-fishing...

Make Ethical Ideas Accessible to Students With a clear presentation, Ethics: Theory and Practice educates readers about ethical theory and has them apply what they learn to specific classic and contemporary moral problems (lying, cheating, establishing ethical business practices, honoring ethical obligations in medicine, etc.). Jacques P. Thiroux first wrote this text 1977 in order to educate readers about ethical theory and its applications in a way that beginning students could understand. The result was an accessible text that isn't too technical and doesn't plunge into complex readings without sufficient background. The text is fully updated with global issues and non-Western ethical views. Keith W. Krasemann now continues Thiroux's efforts of making ethical ideas accessible to students. Besides updating the foundations of the text, Krasemann incorporates new and relevant material, most of which is often unique only to this text. Ethics is a part of philosophy that is concerned with living well and choosing the right course of action. The choice of the course of action is based on moral reasoning and there is no single moral theory on which we can base the choices that we make. The application of moral standards in life is also the concern of Ethics: Theory and Practice, which deals with moral theories in Indian and Western philosophical traditions as well as the debates that centre around their application. The book has ten chapters-the first chapter presents what morality and moral reasoning is; the second chapter is.

The United States Congress President in 1991 endorsed a set of seven universal ethical principles, known as the Noahide Laws, as the "bedrock of society since the dawn of civilization" and as values "upon which our great nation was founded." Associated with the name of Noah, with whom this moral code was completed, practised by Abraham and reiterated at Sinai, these principles constitute the root ethical code of humanity. At a time of great moral and social drift, when both individuals and legislators seek an objective and universal moral compass, these timeless laws have a special relevance and a unifying resonance over different cultures, societies and traditions. The first part of this book sets out the idea or theory of the Noahide laws - from spiritual, philosophical, psychological, social and political perspectives. Various of its contents have already been before leaders, including international statesmen (whose letters are included here), who have responded with encouragement for their study and dissemination. The second part of the book presents the concrete conduct or practice of the Noahide laws. This precise task proceeds from extensive research into the Tradition of commentary on the Revelation at Sinai, of which the Noahide laws (already previously the moral covenant of humanity, but which were authoritively restated at Sinai) form a part. The way the Noahide Laws in their detail structure the ethical conduct of the major domains of human existence is set out clearly for the general reader; and with extensive footnotes and references for those seeking further study.
