In The Ethico-Religious Concepts in the Qur'án Toshihiko Izutsu analyses the guiding spirit of the Islamic moral code, the basic ethical relationship of man to God. Izutsu asserts that, according to the Qur'anic conception, God is of an ethical nature and acts upon man in an ethical way. The resulting implications for man are enormous, requiring devotion not merely to God but to living one's life ethically.Izutsu shows that for the Qur'an our ethical response to God's actions is religion itself; it is at the same time both ethics and religion. Izutsu explores these themes by employing ethnolinguistics, a theory of the interrelations between linguistic cultural patterns, to analyse the semantic structure of major concepts in the Quar'an. Islam, which arose in the seventh century, represents one of the most sweeping religious reforms ever to appear in the East. The Quar'an shows in vividly concrete terms how time-honoured tribal norms came into bloody conflict with new ideals of life, and finally yielded to the rising power. This transitional epoch is of particular importance in the whole of Islamic thought, a time during which the key terms of a traditionally fixed system of values were transformed in their connotative structure, modified in their combinations, and finally integrated into an entirely different system.Originally published in 1959 as The Structure of the Ethical Terms in the Koran and revised under the current title in 1966 this 2002 reprint makes this classic work of Islamic studies once again available.

Never Wholly Other written by Jerusha Tanner Lamptey and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with Religion categories.

How does the Qur'an depict the religious Other? Historically, this question has provoked extensive debate among Islamic scholars about the identity, nature, and status of such religious Others. Today, this debate assumes great importance because of the widening experience of religious plurality, which prompts inquiry into convergences and divergences in belief and practice as well as controversy over the appropriate forms of interaction among different religions. The persistence of religious violence also gives rise to difficult questions about the relationship between the depiction of religious Others, and intolerance and oppression. Scholars have traditionally accounted for the coexistence of religious similarity and difference by resorting either to models that depict religions as isolated entities or models that arrange religions in a static, evaluative hierarchy. In response to the limitations of this discourse, Jerusha Tanner Lamptey constructs an alternative conceptual and hermeneutical approach that draws insights from the work of Muslim women interpreters of the Qur'an, feminist theology, and semantic analysis. She employs this approach to reevaluate, reinterpret, and reenvision the Qur'anic discourse on religious difference. Through a close reading of the Qur'anic text, she distinguishes between two forms of religious difference: hierarchical and lateral. She goes on to explore the complex relationality that exists among Qur'anic concepts of hierarchical religious difference and to articulate a new, integrated model of religious pluralism. Using an interdisciplinary approach to confront existing Islamic scholarship, Lamptey's Never Wholly Other offers a new genre of theology.

The Concept Of Justice In Islam written by Safraz Bacchus and has been published by FriesenPress this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-10-20 with categories.

The book is laid out to outline the Islamic standpoint on justice and it's high standard. This manuscript will attempt to clarify a major misconception that has gained widespread acceptance in some academic circles. The misconception is that the Muslim judge judges blindly according to a rigid set of outdated laws without giving due consideration to what is in the best interest of either the public or in upholding the rights of a person. Finally, it will seek to demonstrate how the ethical standards that govern the conduct and office of the qadi reinforces the public trust and confidence in the Islamic judicial system as a whole. Given that the Islamic judiciary does not have the powers of the sword or the purse - powers that are reserved for the executive and the legislative branches of government - respect is said to be the greatest strength of the institution itself.Islamic law requires a Muslim judge (hakim or qadi) to conform to the highest ethical standards both in their personal conduct and in issuing rulings that are just and seen to be just.
