This is a philosophical treatment of the conceptual and normative aspects of topics which are currently a matter of policy debate in education. The authors have focussed on such concepts as liberty, autonomy, equality and pluralism, and have provided a philosophical commentary which relates these concepts both to a background of philosophical literature, and to the institutional contexts and policy debates in which they function. The book will be of significance to all policy makers who need to gain an understanding of the values and concepts involved in major policy problems.

Across the world, a number of long-term trends - globalization, marketization, managerialism - are now impacting on national education policies. Here, Mike Bottery shows how, paradoxically, these forces are making education both more centralized and more fragmented. In this magisterial study of educational policy and practice, he shows the dangers this creates and, in response, how to create a more humane and democratic education system.

Education is a social practice that poses ethical questions of policy and practice at every level and at almost every turn -- what we teach, how we teach, how we organise educational provision, how we research it, who controls it, and what principles drive policy nationally and internationally. This collection of papers is rooted in the author’s experience in the education system nationally and internationally over half a century and reflects both the educational history of this period and the author’s experience as a teacher, parent, school governor, teacher trainer, educational researcher, senior manager in higher education and advisor to governments in many parts of the world. It is, then, historically located, but the approach to ethical questions is primarily in the tradition of analytic philosophy and applied and situated ethics. The book is aimed at undergraduate and especially postgraduate students studying education, including those interested in philosophy of education; lecturers in education; and those conducting research and engaged in scholarly writing in higher education.

Dilemmas Of Educational Ethics written by Meira Levinson and has been published by Harvard Education Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-01-02 with Education categories.

Educators and policy makers confront challenging questions of ethics, justice, and equity on a regular basis. Should teachers retain a struggling student if it means she will most certainly drop out? Should an assignment plan favor middle-class families if it means strengthening the school system for all? These everyday dilemmas are both utterly ordinary and immensely challenging, yet there are few opportunities and resources to help educators think through the ethical issues at stake. Drawing on research and methods developed in the Justice in Schools project at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Dilemmas of Educational Ethics introduces a new interdisciplinary approach to achieving practical wisdom in education, one that honors the complexities inherent in educational decision making and encourages open discussion of the values and principles we should collectively be trying to realize in educational policy and practice. At the heart of the book are six richly described, realistic accounts of ethical dilemmas that have arisen in education in recent years, paired with responses written by noted philosophers, empirical researchers, policy makers, and practitioners, including Pedro Noguera, Howard Gardner, Mary Pattillo, Andres A. Alonso, Jamie Ahlberg, Toby N. Romer, and Michael J. Petrilli. The editors illustrate how readers can use and adapt these cases and commentaries in schools and other settings in order to reach a difficult decision, deepen their own understanding, or to build teams around shared values.

This work is concerned with appraising the contemporary ethical impact of lifelong learning ideology and advocacy on education, through focusing on trends in educational policy and management that flow from the ideology. It has its origins in the author's concern that many of those trends are being defmed and promoted, or opposed, without an adequate understanding of their ethical dimensions. The 21 trends examined in this work are seen as defming important dimensions of the quite radical changes in educational policy and management that are flowing from the practical realisation of lifelong learning ideology and advocacy. In here evaluating those trends from an ethical perspective, the thesis is developed that they lead inevitably to distinctive ethical dilemmas or tensions in the lived experience of educational participants. The dilemmas, though, are not seen as realities that can intelligently be either avoided or resolved. They are, rather, inescapable features of the trends, although they and the experience of them may be managed intelligently to a greater or lesser extent. This analysis is premised on the belief that an understanding of the dilemmas may be of practical value in assisting educators, and policy makers and managers, to live and work more intelligently with them and to better manage the educational changes that are defmed by the trends. It may thereby contribute to moderating the excesses, sillinesses, and inanities so often evident in the directing and managing of refonns associated with the trends and to reduce the anguish and pain associated with them.
