Most of us wonder how to make sense of the apparent moral excellences or virtues of those who have different visions of the good life or different religious commitments than our own. Rather than flattening or ignoring the deep difference between various visions of the good life, as is so often done, this book turns to the medieval Christian theologian Thomas Aquinas to find a better way. Thomas, it argues, shows us how to welcome the outsider and her virtue as an expression rather than a betrayal of one's own distinctive vision. It shows how Thomas, driven by a Christian commitment to charity and especially informed by Augustine, synthesized Augustinian and Aristotelian elements to construct an ethics that does justice—in love—to insiders and outsiders alike. Decosimo offers the first analysis of Thomas on pagan virtue and a reinterpretation of Thomas's ethics while providing a model for our own efforts to articulate a truthful hospitality and do ethics in our pluralist, globalized world.

In giving to charity, should we strive to do the greatest good or promote a lesser good that we care more about? On such issues, ethical theory can have momentous practical effects. This volume is a unique collection of new papers on philanthropy from a range of philosophical perspectives. The authors are among the best-regarded philosophers writing on ethics today and include a number of thinkers who have not previously published on the subject. Most recently published work by philosophers on charitable giving tends to support what is called effective altruism-doing the most good you can. In practice, however, charitable giving is often local and relatively ineffective, supporting causes dear to the givers' hearts. Are ineffective givers doing wrong or merely doing less praiseworthy work than they might? This volume includes at least three challenges to the effective altruism movement, as well as two chapters that defend it against the gathering tide of objections. Most thinkers who align with utilitarianism support effective altruism, and some other perspectives do as well. But the ideal of personal integrity can push the other way. So can justice-based theories of giving: perhaps I could do the most good by stealing and giving to the poor, but that would be unjust. In the most important cases, however, justice leads to the same result as effective altruism. Other theories give different results. The authors represent include intuitionism, virtue ethics, Kantian ethics, utilitarianism, theory of justice, and the ideal of personal integrity.

Excerpt from Institutional Ethics In this work, the terms "justice" and "grace" (charity) have been used for two reasons: first, to distinguish the process of evolution in man from evolution in the other orders of creation; second, because of the historical significance of these terms. The process of development of man in institutional life is similar rather than identical with the processes of development in inorganic nature, in plant-life and in the lower forms of animal life. There is an external similarity in these processes that often leads to their identification. The inherent activity of the inorganic world often displays itself as a "superabundance of energy." In the plant-world there is a degree of individuality shown in the fact of the preservation of the species; but apparently, there is a reckless expenditure of the life of the individual plant. In the animal-world, the animals below man have sufficient selfactivity and persistence to retain their space relations, and to form in consciousness a world conditioned upon feeling and sense-perception, without the higher form of reflection and reason; there is also in the animal-world a sacrifice of the individual animal, but a preservation of the species. This process of the sacrifice of the life of one for the good of others becomes in man a conscious process of self-making. And only as there is a voluntariness in the act that indicates a free self-determining personality are the terms just and charitable applied to acts.
