Health promotion is an increasingly important part of the work of most health professionals. Yet health promotion is qualitatively different from traditional health care activities. This book will be a focused introduction to, and exploration of, ethical issues in health promotion. It aims to provide a rationale for the underlying value of health promotion and for resolving value conflicts. To what extent should an individual be obliged to contribute to the collective health of a society? Should a society be more concerned to promote health than to treat existing disease and illness? Indeed can a society be said to have a responsibility for the health of its members? The first part of the book addresses the theoretical context of ethics and health promotion. The second part focuses on examples relating to nursing and other health professionals, using a case study approach. The book will be invaluable in helping professionals understand and respond to ethical challenges in practical ways.

An Ethic For Health Promotion written by David R. Buchanan and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-01-20 with Medical categories.

What are the goals of health promotion and the most apropriate means of achieving them? The prevailing view is that these goals are to prolong life and reduce mortality rates. Since the leading causes of morbidity and mortality are now largely attributable to lifestyle behaviors--smoking, diet, exercise, etc.--the means of achieving reductions in heart disease, cancer, strokes, diabetes and other chronic conditins are to identify more effective techniques for changing people's behavior. Virtually all health promotion research is currently directed towards accomplishing this objective. But at what cost? As researchers strive for more effective ways to change people's behavior, what are the implications for individual autonomy, integrity, and responsibility? Buchanan sets out to explain why a science of health promotion is neither imminent or estimable. He argues that health promotin is inescapably a moral and political endeavor and that goals more befitting the realization of human well-being are to promote self-knowledge, individual autonomy, integrity, and responsibility through putting into practice more democratic processes of self-direction and mutual support in civil society.

Ethics in Health Education Edited by Spyros Doxiadis President, Foundation for Research in Childhood, Athens The field of health education is growing in importance as it becomes increasingly clear that many of our most serious health problems are linked with lifestyle and behaviour. Health education is, however, only one factor among many which influence attitudes towards health, and there are numerous different concepts and models of health and disease. Government policies on environmental, economic and social issues, as well as the powerful images created by the mass media, make a strong impression on the public which can often be at odds with the messages given out by the health care professions. The methods used to educate people to lead healthier lives, and the means by which they learn, form the subject of this unique, multidisciplinary volume. Against a wide range of different backgrounds and locations, an international group of experts discuss the main areas of concern with the aim of stimulating increased interest and research activity amongst those working in the fields of health education, medical ethics, community medicine, philosophy, sociology and politics. Health Promotion Ethics: A Framework for Social Justice critically considers the ethical dimensions of promoting health with individuals and communities, encouraging a nuanced understanding of health promotion in the context of fairness, empowerment and social justice. The concept of social justice, indeed, is central. The book explores how health promotion should be considered in relation to moral, social and legal issues, from individual responsibility to government intervention, as well as the possibility that existing practice maintains rather than alleviates existing health inequalities by stigmatising certain groups. It also questions the ‘rights’ of those who promote health to use particular strategies, for example using fear to encourage behaviour change. The ethics of health promotion practice and research are considered, introducing several important debates. Case studies, international material and opportunities to reflect on practice are used throughout to bring the important issues under discussion to life, engaging both students and practitioners alike. The book provides a fascinating route to reflect on what it really means to promote health for all in a more equitable way.
