Im vorliegenden Band wird Husserls 1920 erstmals gehaltene und 1924 wiederholte Vorlesung über Ethik veröffentlicht. In ihr wendet sich Husserl nach einer systematischen Bestimmung des Begriffs der Ethik einer kritischen Darstellung der Geschichte der Ethik zu. Diese Darstellung ist am Gegensatz von Rationalismus und Empirismus orientiert, der sich in der Ethik in den gegensätzlichen Ansätzen der Verstandes- und Gefühlsmoralisten zeigt. Im Rahmen einer Auseinandersetzung mit klassischen Positionen aus der Geschichte der Ethik versucht Husserl, die Grundlagen seiner eigenen Ethik zu gewinnen und darin die traditionellen Gegenüberstellungen zu versöhnen. So steht für Husserl die Gefühlsgrundlage der Moral nicht im Widerspruch zur Idee eines absoluten Sollens, an der Husserl im Anschluss an Kant und Fichte festhält. Husserls Ausführungen gipfeln in dem Ideal eines universalen vernunftbestimmten Willenslebens, in dem alle Aktsetzungen endgültig zu rechtfertigen wären. Zur Vorlesung gehört ein umfangreicher Exkurs, in dem Husserl durch eine phänomenologische Analyse des Unterschieds zwischen Sach- und Normbegriffen den wissenschaftstheoretischen Charakter der Ethik als normativer Geisteswissenschaft bestimmt.

Wie kann sich eine Ethik des glückenden Lebens auf konkreten Handlungsfeldern bewähren? Diese Leitfragen durchziehen die Überlegungen von Konrad Hilpert wie ein roter Faden. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit schenkt er dabei den vieldiskutierten Fragen am Beginn und Ende des Lebens und deren Gestaltung durch den auf Selbstbestimmung ausgerichteten Menschen ebenso wie Fragen leiblicher Identität und neuen wie alten Formen des Zusammenlebens. Ein wichtiger Beitrag zum gemeinsamen Ringen um authentisches und kohärentes Menschsein. Die Beiträge der ersten Gruppe behandeln Grundfragen und stecken damit das theoretische Feld ab, in dem gedacht und von dem aus argumentiert wird. Es geht also in ihnen um Begründungen, um Ansätze und Argumentationstypen und weniger um die Wahrnehmung und die Reflexion möglicher einzelner Herausforderungen und Lösungen. Hierauf gerichtet sind hingegen die Beiträge der zweiten Gruppe. Sie befassen sich mit konkreten Fragestellungen, die in jüngerer Zeit Gegenstand eines breiteren Interesses, der anspruchsvolleren Erwachsenenbildung und gesellschaftlicher Kontroversen waren. Konkret geht es um die umstrittenen Fragen am Beginn und am Ende des Lebens und deren Gestaltung durch den auf Selbstbestimmung ausgerichteten Menschen ebenso wie um das Bemühen um neue und alte Formen des Zusammenlebens, die dem menschlichen Streben nach Glück Raum und Zukunft geben. Im Fachjargon der Ethiker-Zunft spricht man auch von Problemen der speziellen oder angewandten Ethik. Die hier behandelten Probleme lassen deutlich werden, dass sich der Schwerpunkt der fachethischen Diskussion – gleich ob sie sich als philosophische oder als theologische Disziplin versteht – innerhalb der letzten Jahre auf das Gebiet der Angewandten Ethik verlagert hat. Konkret geht es hierbei um "klassische" Themen des Umgangs mit Leben und Sterben, Liebe und Sexualität, Ehe und Familie ebenso wie um neue Problemstellungen, die sich aus den Fortschritten in Wissenschaft, Medizin und Technik ergeben und als Bioethik, Medizinethik, Rechtsethik usw. ganz neue Areale ethischen Nachdenkens entstehen lassen. Ethik artikuliert sich aber nicht nur als Reflexion von Handlungen, sondern achtet auch auf die Haltungen, die die moralischen Subjekte erwerben können. Solche guten bzw. schlechten Gewohnheiten – in traditioneller Sprache "Tugenden" bzw. "Laster" – sind die Basis und die zeitlich konstanten Einstellungen, aus denen heraus konkrete Entscheidungen und Handlungen erwachsen und in bestimmten Handlungskonstellationen ("Situationen") durchgehalten werden. Solchen exemplarischen Haltungen gelten die Darlegungen der dritten Gruppe von Beiträgen.

The goal of the present study unfolds in the following four ways. First, in analyzing Pauline writings (primarily Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians) it can be demonstrated that the Apostle can be described as an ethicist. The hypothesis operative here is that in the sources, despite their occasional and situational character and their epistolary form, one can recognize a coherent system of grounds for behavior (i.e., ethics). I call this recognizable ethics “implicit ethics.” Secondly, this work pursues an explicit ethical interpretation of Paul’s writings. What does it mean to read these texts through an ethical lens? I here offer an approach with which one can decipher the ethical content of a historical text. This methodology for ethical analysis (so called ‘organon’) is not only applicable to Paul’s writings, but can also provide an impetus for the ethical interpretation of other NT texts and even for the literature of early Christianity and the Bible more generally. The variety of forms and the complexity of the reflection in Paul’s letters can, in a third point, enrich the discourse of theological ethics. It will be seen, that the rationale for his ethics is pluralistic and simply cannot be described in a one-sided manner as simply being a “deontological ethics of norms.” Along these lines, a fourth element is found in stimulating interdisciplinary debates concerning ethics. If one is able to examine and describe the norms and grounds of justification in Biblical ethics using the language and forms of description utilized in modern ethical theory, biblical ethics could once again gain a voice that can be taken seriously in the modern discussion of values. The point is not to have Scripture per se join the discussion but for these texts to function as a “laboratory” (Paul Ricoeur) in which ethical speech and thought relevant for contemporary concerns can be inspired and encouraged. In a concluding chapter this dialogue is already started by describing specific aspects of Pauline ethics against the background or moral philosophical debate, e.g. “bodily ethics – beyond hedonism”, “ethics of relinquishing – beyond contractual ethics” or “ethics of love beyond Eudaimonian ethics”.

Do human rights apply only to a certain culture group or can they be demanded of all cultures and religions? This discussion about a common world ethos demonstrates how relevant and explosive that question is. In his study of ethical relativism and historical thinking, Eberhard Schockenhoff shows how the universal recognition of fundamental norms that guarantee the minimum conditions for human existence can be substantiated.
