In her book Hille Haker pleads for a radical course correction of Catholic social ethics by focusing on three foundational concepts of social ethics: human rights, human dignity and moral responsibility based on the interplay of compassion, solidarity and justice. The author argues for a historically and politically mediated ethics that replaces the natural law ethics. The theoretical reflections of the book are carried out by the practical social-ethical studies: The politicization of individual human rights is examined in the contexts of migration, religious freedom, and criminal justice. Human dignity is spelled out as "vulnerable agency" allowing for a sharp criticism of Catholic sexual morality and neglect of women's human rights.The book ends with a discussion of the relationship of political theology and political ethics and its social-ethical implications for the further development of a Critical Political Ethics.

This book highlights views on responsive, participatory and democratic approaches to evaluation from an ethos of care. It critically scrutinizes and discusses the invisibility of care in our contemporary Western societies and evaluation practices that aim to measure practices by external standards. Alternatively, the book proposes several foci for evaluators who work from a care perspective or wish to encourage a caring society. This is a society that sees evaluation and care as a continuously unfolding relational practice of moral-political learning contributing to life-sustaining webs. ‘At one level is the evaluator’s immediately responsive and interpersonal encounter with the personal troubles of social actors, most visible, as Mills originally pointed out, in an individual’s biography and in those social settings directly open to the individual’s lived experience. (...) At another level, the sociological and political level, the evaluator operates at what Mills called the arena of public issues where immediate personal troubles are seen not only as problems encountered by individuals but as the result of structural and political arrangements in society (...) evaluation for a caring society is thought to operate at both levels’ (Thomas A. Bestimmte Personen sind im Freiheitsentzug nicht nur durch die räumliche Abgeschiedenheit vulnerabel, sondern sie sind zusätzlich aufgrund ihres Geschlechts, ihres Alters, ihrer sexuellen Orientierung, aufgrund einer bestimmten Krankheit, wegen ihrer Herkunft oder auch in Folge einer bestimmten religiösen Praxis im Freiheitsentzug potentiell einer Reihe von Risiken ausgesetzt. In Europa und in der Schweiz erhält das Thema der Verletzlichkeit im Freiheitsentzug zunehmende Bedeutung, da der Anteil bestimmter vulnerabler Personengruppen an der Gesamtpopulation der Gefangenen zunimmt. Vertreter der Praxis und internationaler Organisationen sind bestrebt, Richtlinien und Konzepte zu formulieren, um den Sanktionenvollzug für bestimmte Personengruppen menschenrechtskonformer und professioneller zu gestalten. Im Nachgang an die 9. Freiburger Strafvollzugstage (November 2014) enthält die vorliegende Publikation Beiträge von Vertreter der Praxis, der Wissenschaft sowie internationaler Organisationen. En détention, certaines personnes ne sont pas vulnérables uniquement en raison de leur isolement spatial. Elles sont également exposées à toute une série de risques dans le cadre de la privation de liberté en raison de leur sexe, de leur âge, de leur orientation sexuelle, de certaines maladies, de leur origine ou encore de leur pratique religieuse. En Europe et, plus particulièrement en Suisse, le thème de la vulnérabilité gagne de plus en plus d'importance, puisque les personnes vulnérables représentent une part toujours plus grande au sein de la population carcérale. Les organisations internationales ainsi que les praticiens s'efforcent de formuler des lignes directrices et des concepts pour garantir à ces groupes de personnes une prise en charge plus professionnelle et respectueuse de la dignité humaine. Faisant suite aux 9es Journées pénitentiaires de Fribourg (novembre 2014), la présente publication réunit des contributions formulées dans la perspective de la pratique, du monde scientifique et de celle des organisations internationales.
