During the transition to the early Neolithic, a number of changes took place among the hunter-fishers of southern Norway. One of the most important social changes may have been the development of more marked ethnic boundaries, which were related to increasing social inequality among the local groups. In this study, the main theme is the investigation of whether such ethnic boundaries can be delineated. The author identifies them archaeologically, and discusses how and why they were established and maintained.

This study of the Late Neolithic and Bronze Age in Inner Sogn, western Norway, is based on material from an area on the periphery of southern Scandinavia. Though this mountainous region was peripheral and agriculturally marginal, it was not marginal in regard to pastoral and wildlife resources. Prescott explores how this area was exploited, responding to the extensive archaeological material from Ardal as well as to theoretical and methodological approaches in previous studies of Late Neolithic and Bronze Age material. He attempts to analyze aspects of human behaviour, social organization, and land use in this particular period and region.

The social processes involved in acquiring flint and stone in the Neolithic began to be considered over thirty years ago, promoting a more dynamic view of past extraction processes. Whether by quarrying, mining or surface retrieval, the geographic source locations of raw materials and their resultant archaeological sites have been approached from different methodological and theoretical perspectives. In recent years this has included the exploration of previously undiscovered sites, refined radiocarbon dating, comparative ethnographic analysis and novel analytical approaches to stone tool manufacture and provenancing. The aim of this volume in the Neolithic Studies Group Papers is to explore these new findings on extraction sites and their products. How did the acquisition of raw materials fit into other aspects of Neolithic life and social networks? How did these activities merge in creating material items that underpinned cosmology, status and identity? Hunter-gatherer societies are constrained by their environment and the technologies available to them. However, until now the role of culture in foraging communities has not been widely considered.
