Hunter-gatherer societies are constrained by their environment and the technologies available to them. However, until now the role of culture in foraging communities has not been widely considered. 'Structured Worlds' examines the role of cosmology, values, and perceptions in the archaeological histories of hunter-fisher-gatherers. The essays examine a range of cultures - Mesolithic Europe, Siberia, Jomon Japan, the Northwest Coast, the northern Plains, and High Arctic of North America - to show the role of conceptual frameworks in subsistence and settlement, technology, mobility, migration, demography, and social organization. Spanning from the early Holocene period to the present day, 'Structured Worlds' draws on archaeology and ethnography to explore the role of beliefs, ritual, and social values in the interaction between foragers and their physical and social landscape. Material culture, animal bones and settlement patterns show that the behaviours of hunter-gatherers were shaped as much by cultural concepts as by material need.

In a world defined by order and structure, there exists a realm of the absurd, the nonsensical, and the inexplicable. Nonsense and Order: The Role of Disorder in a Structured World delves into the fascinating world of nonsense, exploring its vielfältig manifestations across various disciplines and aspects of life. This book takes readers on a journey through the realm of the absurd, uncovering the significance of the seemingly random, the nonsensical, and the absurd. From the playful and humorous to the profound and thought-provoking, nonsense reveals itself as a complex and multifaceted phenomenon that challenges our assumptions about the nature of reality and our place within it. One of the most intriguing aspects of nonsense is its ability to disrupt and subvert established norms. In a world obsessed with order and predictability, nonsense acts as a catalyst for change and innovation. It forces us to question our assumptions, to think outside the box, and to embrace the unknown. Through art, literature, and everyday conversations, nonsense shakes us out of our complacency and opens our minds to new possibilities. Nonsense also plays a crucial role in communication and social interaction. It can be a tool for humor, a way to express complex emotions, or a means of conveying hidden messages. By stepping outside the boundaries of conventional language and logic, nonsense allows us to communicate in ways that would otherwise be impossible. It creates a space for ambiguity, interpretation, and the exploration of new ideas. The book also delves into the profound implications of nonsense for our understanding of the human psyche. Dreams, for example, are often filled with nonsensical images and scenarios that provide valuable insights into our subconscious minds. Similarly, the use of nonsense in psychotherapy can help individuals access and process difficult emotions and experiences that defy rational explanation. Nonsense acts as a bridge between the conscious and unconscious realms, offering a unique perspective on the workings of the human mind. Throughout history, nonsense has been a source of inspiration and fascination for artists, writers, and thinkers from all walks of life. The book examines the role of nonsense in different cultures and societies, exploring how it has been used to challenge authority, critique social norms, and express dissent. Nonsense and Order: The Role of Disorder in a Structured World is an invitation to explore the hidden order within chaos and discover the profound impact of disorder on our structured world. It is a thought-provoking and entertaining journey into the realm of the absurd, where the boundaries of logic and reason are playfully challenged and the unexpected becomes a source of enlightenment. Steven French articulates and defends the bold claim that there are no objects in the world. He draws on metaphysics and philosophy of science to argue for structural realism—the position that we live in a world of structures—and defends a form of eliminativism about objects that sets laws and symmetry principles at the heart of ontology.

Sociology After The Crisis written by Charles C. Lemert and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-12-22 with Social Science categories.

Widely assigned and taught in senior capstone and social theory courses, Sociology After the Crisis offers the first systematic theory of social differences built on the sociological traditions by embracing to Durkheim, Weber and other familiar figures. The first edition was acclaimed for its nuanced and original rereading of Durkheim in relation to the theoretical reasons he and his contemporaries neglected race and gender. This new edition features two chapters of new material written in the summer of 2003, as the new social structures of the 21st century became increasingly clear. The new Chapter Ten draws upon 9-11, the "new world order" of two Bush presidencies, and globalization to show how individuals' lives and sociologies must be thought about in new ways. These events also highlight how American society and sociology have responded and sometimes failed in the struggle over the crisis of modernism. Reviews for the First Edition: "[This] expansive reimagining of the historical roots of sociological imagination - especially as it embraces voices and visions long lost to our most important national debates - is balm to the fractured soul of American society. Lemert's elegant and passionate volume will aid immeasurably in our nation's search for sane solutions to the crises of purpose and perspective he so skillfully explores." Michael Eric Dyson, author of Making Malcolm and Between God and Gangsta' Rap "Elegantly crafted." Steven Seidman, State University of New York at Albany

The credence framework is widely used for working with probabilities in science, social science, and policy. Anna Mahtani argues that credences are not about objects in themselves, but rather about objects under a designator, and that this insight has far-reaching implications for our understanding of rationality, decision theory, and economics.

The world of scholarly and not-for-profit publishing is facing many challenges at the start of the twenty-first century, from technical and organisational factors to prevailing social and economic conditions. If scholarly journals, in particular, are to survive, the publishers of these journals are going to have to make dramatic changes to the ways they create and distribute them. Work is already underway at some university presses who have developed creative solutions to overcome these challenges in producing print journals. These early innovators represent an opportunity for all publishers to build on the advantages of e- publishing and possibly reach even larger audiences. This work demystifies the current state of scholarly journal publishing as well as offering a glimpse of hope for journals in the digital world. It will appeal not only to students and researchers, but to anyone who has an interest in the future of publishing.

Industrial Shift The Structure Of The New World Economy written by J. Atikian and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-05-02 with Business & Economics categories.

In a turbulent global economy, the popular idea of declining farms and factories is largely unfounded. UN and World Bank data show growing output everywhere, but it remains hidden by the faster-growing service sector. Engineers, programmers, surgeons, and pilots make up an increasing share of what is actually the service sector, showing that this sector is not in decline. There is no doubt that industries are shifting, but how does it all add up? Quantifying these technology-driven shifts is fundamental, yet such publication has lagged for years, with stale ideas about what makes a healthy economy persisting since the 1940s. In this new work, Atikian gives us a freshly updated overview countering our tired assumptions about off-shoring, low wages, and industrial decline and providing us with...some fact based confidence in the economy.
