This volume is based on papers presented on ethnic minorities and inter-ethnic relations in Hungary and The Netherlands, which were presented and discussed in three conferences and a series of meetings from 1997-1999. This work builds on comparative studies of the rise of a radical right and the mobilization of anti-immigrant feelings. It presents cross-national comparative research, due to the creedence that shifting national angles is a powerful strategic tool with which to correct national bias and to uncover submerged or overlooked aspects of specific national cases. The book brings together contributions from Hungarian and Dutch scholars in the field of ethnic minorities and inter-ethnic relations. The two countries are used as exemplary cases of distinct ethno-political patterns in Central and Western Europe. Combining complementary configurational and dimensional approaches to cross-national comparison, the diverse forms of ethnic relations in Hungary and The Netherlands are analyzed, and competing explanations of ethno-political conflict (or co-ordination) are tested in both national contexts.

While ethnic inequalities are a problem to be dealt with very seriously, ethnic differences are an inevitable fact. Managing inter-ethnic relations is an increasing challenge of our times: within a wide variety of social contexts ranging from interactions at the micro level to the globalised macro level. There are two central purposes of this book: to provide a new theoretical framework to analyse inter-ethnic relations and to empirically test this innovative approach in evaluation of management of inter-ethnic relations in Slovenia within the two key subsystems: education and the media.

South-East Asia is one of the most complex regions in the world as far as ethnic, linguistic and cultural diversity is concerned with an extremely rich ancient and contemporary history. Because of this, it offers an exceptionally rich field of study for inter-ethnic relations. This book examines interethnic relationships between groups and the dynamics of exchange networks throughout Asia and includes case studies based in Vietnam, Burma, Laos, Nepal, China, and Siberia. The innovative aspect of this book lies in the fact that the contributors examine relationships between groups and the dynamics of exchange networks across Asia rather than ethnic groups studied in isolation. Rendering the important moments of daily life of ethnic groups and focussing on the exchanges between groups sharing a specific social space, this approach, today still rarely used in Asian anthropology, allows systems of exchange to emerge and for us to understand the systems of power and local leadership from the inside out. Inter-Ethnic Dynamics in Asia will be of interest to students and scholars of Asian culture and society, ethnicity and regional anthropology.

This book explores the various meanings of multiethnicity in Singapore. By focusing on selected arenas and processes, it examines how "ethnic" and "interethnic" dimensions interact in the construction of community and identity in the context of nation-building. Its analysis ranges from detailed ethnography to discussion of broad features and issues, and links micro and macro data by juxtaposing the two levels and showing how they interact. Theoretically, the study addresses several issues involving ethnic identity and community, modes of ethnic interaction, and nation-building in a multiethnic context. It confirms and elaborates on the symbolic-affective power of ethnicity, the contradictory trends of ethnic harmony and tension in interaction, and the structuring impact of macro forces. Empirically, it documents the Singapore case of how individuals, groups, and the state manage ethnicity and ethnic relations for viable multiethnic living.

Simpson; the publication of The Bell Curve; and the continuing attacks on Affirmative Action have all affected the ways in which race and the surrounding issues of racism and identity have been reported in the media and studied in the classroom. The Dictionary of Race and Ethnic Relations covers a range of national and international topics which have been written by a distinguished group of experts on race and ethnicity. The reader will find new articles covering recent events, historical and theoretical perspectives and important figures. Ethnicity and Education in England and Europe examines where, when and how minority ethnic groups miss out on educational opportunities. Through a combination of comparative, quantitative and qualitative methodologies and the showcasing of new research, it provides a fresh approach to examining the long-standing debates over ethnicity, and in particular ethnic differences in educational achievement. Drawing on extensive empirical research in England, as well as information gathered as part of a major international programme of research under the auspices of the European Union (EDUMIGROM), this book both synthesises the findings of the English team and puts these findings in context through comparison with the analytical material generated in a range of other European countries. With a key focus on the educational experiences and outcomes of the Roma in Central and Eastern Europe, as compared with the experiences of minority ethnic groups in Western Europe, this volume provides a contemporary assessment of ethnic relations across a selected range of European countries. Presenting comparative, cross-national analyses of ethnic inequalities and policy interventions, Ethnicity and Education in England and Europe makes a significant contribution to debates in the fields of migration, ethnicity and education, and will be of interest to both scholars and policy makers concerned with questions of race and educational outcome.

An Ethnic History Of Russia written by T. M. Masti︠u︡gina and has been published by Praeger this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996 with History categories.

From its beginnings Russia has been a polyethnic society, and so has a long history of dealing with ethnic problems. From its imperial stage through the Soviet years it has experienced the pressures of ethnic assimilation and ethnic nationalism. In recent years, political liberalization and economic turmoil have released pent-up nationalistic and separatist feelings which had lain dormant through the Communist regimes. This study presents an ethnic history of Russia, placing present-day turmoil in the context of Russian history. The authors analyze inter-ethnic relations in Russia and provide a detailed description of the key ethnic groups. They also look at the evolution of ethnic structure and the current ethnopolitical movements in different regions of Russia. Consequently, the study points the way to future inter-ethnic relations in Russia and, indeed, the future of the Russian Federation.
