The 1976 Claremont, California, symposium to exchange and clarify ideas regarding the study and implementation of new alternatives to quality cultural education focused on two main concepts. The first was the concept of transcultural education design; the second, that cultural uniqueness in our society results from the capability to be responsive and responsible to opportunities of having cultural options with more than one defined culture. Fifteen presentations from the symposium have been collected in this book of readings intended for teachers, counselors, curriculum planners, resource specialists, teacher trainers, and administrators. The articles address the rationale, design, and instructional process of transcultural education; bilingual transcultural education; teacher preparation for a pluralistic society and for bilingual teachers; materials evaluation and selection; curriculum development; testing and cultural diversity; and social studies and transcultural education. La Belle and Ward address a major question confronting American higher education--How do colleges and universities best prepare students for common citizenship in a diverse, democratic state while also nurturing their groups' cultures, values, and institutional participation? The authors clarify current debates about diversity and the content of curriculum, what one commentator calls the "culture wars." The book includes an overview of ethnicity, intergroup relations, and related concepts; the history and development of multiculturalism and ethnic studies in higher education in the United States; and an analysis of the issues related to diversity in higher education, particularly as they relate to tensions between ethnic studies and multicultural efforts. The authors share their vision of how higher education might be made more open to ethnic and other groups, while broadening the learning about diversity for all students. They emphasize the role that institutional and student cultures, including extra-curricular organizations and activities, play in achieving these goals.

This benchmark 6-volume set documents, analyzes, and critiques a comprehensive body of research on the history of multicultural education in the U.S. By collecting and providing a framework for key publications spanning the past 30-40 years, these volumes provide a means of understanding and visualizing the development, implementation, and interpretation of multicultural education in American society. These volumes do not promote any one scholar's or group's vision of multicultural education, but include conflicting ideals that inform multiple interpretations. Each volume contains archival documents organized around a specific theme: Volume 1 Conceptual Frameworks and Curricular Content Volume II Foundations and Stratifications Volume III Instruction and Assessment Volume VI Policy and Governance Volume V Students and Student Learning Volume VI Teachers and Teacher Education The historical time line within each volume illustrates the progression of research and theory on each theme and encourages readers to reflect on the changes in language and thinking concerning educational scholarship in that area. Readers will also see how language, pedagogical issues, and policy reforms have been constructed, assimilated, and mutated over the highlighted period of time. Exploring the tenets of the field and examining the individuals whose work has contributed significantly to equity and social justice for all citizens, this landmark set illuminates the historical importance, current relevance, and future implications of multicultural education.
