In contrast to most other countries, both Germany and Israel have descent-based concepts of nationhood and have granted members of their nation (ethnic Germans and Jews) who wish to immigrate automatic access to their respective citizenship privileges. Therefore these two countries lend themselves well to comparative analysis of the integration process of immigrant groups, who are formally part of the collective "self" but increasingly transformed into "others." The book examines the integration of these 'privileged' immigrants in relation to the experiences of other minority groups (e.g. labor migrants, Palestinians). This volume offers rich empirical and theoretical material involving historical developments, demographic changes, sociological problems, anthropological insights, and political implications. Focusing on the three dimensions of citizenship: sovereignty and control, the allocation of social and political rights, and questions of national self-understanding, the essays bring to light the elements that are distinctive for either society but also point to similarities that owe as much to nation-specific characteristics as to evolving patterns of global migration.

Making a new case for separating citizenship from nationality, this book comparatively examines a key selection of nation-states in terms of their definitions of nationality and citizenship, and the ways in which the association of some with the European Union has transformed these definitions. In a combination of case studies from Europe and the Middle East, this book’s comparative framework addresses the question of citizenship and ethnic conflict from the foundation of the nation-state, to the current challenges raised by globalization. This edited volume examines six different countries and looks at the way that ethnic or religious identity lies at the core of the national community, ultimately determining the state’s definition and treatment of its citizens. The selected contributors to this new volume investigate this common ambiguity in the construction of nations, and look at the contrasting ways in which the issues of citizenship and identity are handled by different nation-states. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars studying in the areas of citizenship and the nation-state, ethnic conflict, globalization and Middle Eastern and European Politics.

Challenging Inequalities: Readings in Race, Ethnicity, and Immigration offers a fresh perspective on current research by examining the histories and historiographies of racism on both the micro (individual) and macro (institutional) levels. The anthology highlights the ways in which race is and has long been structured in social institutions, as well as the various ways in which institutional systems maintain and perpetuate such social inequalities. Featuring writings not only from pioneers in this field of study, but also from more recently established and emerging scholars, the anthology draws from diverse disciplines including ethnic studies, history, educational leadership, communication, Native American studies, Latinx studies, and creative writing. The contributing authors have been on the frontlines, teaching on topics that exemplify the very reasons why race and ethnicity still matter so deeply as the longstanding results of conquest, slavery, and migration. These educators, in many cases, have also been involved on the ground, serving as grassroots advocates in their communities and in the world at large. Intended for undergraduate audiences, Challenging Inequalities is conceptually and theoretically informed, yet accessible in style and tone. Its fresh combination of academic rigor and personal perspectives is rooted in the call to activism and is well suited to courses in ethnic studies, sociology, race and ethnicity, counseling, and education. Hortencia JimEnez earned her Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Texas, Austin. Dr. JimEnez has been a faculty member in the Department of Sociology at Hartnell College since 2010. Her writing has appeared in Latinos Studies, the Journal of Immigrant and Refugee Studies, Social Problems, Community College Moment, and Chicana/Latina Studies: The Journal of Mujeres Activas En Letras y Cambio Social. Dr. JimEnez' more recent collaborative work centers on the experiences of student parents at the community college level. Her forthcoming co-authored chapter will be feature in The Chicana M(other)work Anthology: Porque Sin Madres No Hay RevoluciOn (University of Arizona Press).

Set in Malaysia, this book encompasses language and cultural policy challenges that many other multi-ethnic nations currently have to address. The people of Malaysia constitute a diverse ethnic, linguistic and cultural population and one of the continuing challenges is the development and establishment of the Malaysian people’s ethnic, national and global cultural identities. This challenge is evident in the journey of language and cultural policy from the post-independence period to the 21st century; a period of over 50 years. The book highlights political, socio-cultural, economic and knowledge economy factors as they impact on decisions made by the government with regard to language policy in the various educational systems. It examines decisions made on the selection of the national language, the medium of instruction in educational systems, the varying changes in language policy for the field of science and technology and the maintenance and sustenance of minority languages.

Ethnicity plays a vital role in contemporary world politics. This collection of essays documents the international dimensions of ethnic identity by examining the interaction between ethnicity and the actions of modern nation-states in a variety of global, regional, and urban settings throughout the world. The editor, John F. Stack, Jr., provocatively argues that the dynamics of ethnicity in the contemporary world are best examined from the perspective of primordial attachments--those givens of social existence based on family ties, race, custom, language, religion, and region. This perspective is disputed by a number of the contributors who see ethnicity as the result of instrumental forces--state building, socioeconomic class, modernization, political development, and the transformation of the global political economy.

The Challenges Of Ethno Nationalism written by Adrian Guelke and has been published by Palgrave MacMillan this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-05-19 with Political Science categories.

Ethno-nationalism has been a key concern of the post-Cold War world, often associated with violent conflict and the horrors of ethnic cleansing. This book shows, however, that the issue of ethno-nationalism is much broader than its depiction in the media. It demonstrates how ethno-nationalism is not simply the recourse of minorities seeking separation from existing states, but that it can also be associated with dominant and majority groups. The contributors explore this complex phenomenon through a series of case studies and analyse its wide geographical spread from India to Bolivia and from Russia to Spain. Different angles on the Irish case are presented, and a comparative analysis underscoring the options available for accommodating ethno-nationalist parties and movements is also included. The volume is multidisciplinary and the authors employ a variety of methodologies, including the innovative use of visual representation, to advance our understanding of the nature of ethno-nationalism.
