This book offers a multi-contributor view on the linguistic landscape research in Spain, focusing on both monolingual and bilingual regions of Spain with an interest in initiatives that promote social and linguistic justice without neglecting migrant and international languages in the territory. The agency of speakers is highlighted, as well as the processes of linguistic hybridization and identity claims that are created in Spain. This volume analyzes the semiotic meaning of different languages, varieties, and discursive practices in different Spanish contexts from an ethnographic, multimodal, and critical perspective. It observes how some languages, varieties, and repertoires are privileged in top-down institutional environments, whilst others respond to bottom-up initiatives that contemplate complex processes of identity construction in Spain, in order to decide whether or not a greater balance between majority and minority languages is achieved in different contexts and spaces nowadays.

This book uses a sociolinguistic framework to explore how language serves as a marker of national identity in conflict zones, focusing on the dystopian representation of Arabic as a minority language in Israel through the perspectives of Israeli Palestinian students. Using a documentary photography research tool, PhotoVoice, minoritized college students from Northern Israel were invited to document and reflect on the signage in their area. Content analysis of students’ reflections revealed not only a problematic linguistic reality in which the presence of Arabic was limited and inaccurate, but also their experience of the space as local inhabitants. The book chapters shed light on their profound perceptions and aspirations as passers-by toward the (mis)representation of their native language in the country. The contribution of the book lies in demonstrating the potential of the innovative tool PhotoVoice in developing awareness of the explicit and implicit messages delivered through linguistic landscapes. It encourages action for achieving utopian, more inclusive linguistic realities where minority languages are appropriately represented.

"Seeking Identity: Language in Society" looks at how we define and create identity both as individuals and as a society through language. Our language choices reflect not only how we view ourselves, but how we are viewed by society. An individual's identity is reflected in various language construed identities: ethnicity, gender, and cross-cultural/counter cultural. In turn these identities are projected by society on the individual/ethnic group by the language choices society makes in describing and addressing these individuals. This book juxtaposes superdiversity with the reality of English-centricity in the United States, set against the long-standing challenges regarding migration and language policy in the US, most recently underlined by Donald Trump’s 2016 election win and subsequent aggressive and partially successful attempts to limit migration. The book explores the history, policies, and practices of an adolescent newcomer program in Central Ohio, in the US Midwest, that seeks to provide an equitable and engaging education to its students. It addresses, on the one hand, positive, progressive institutional responses, including an embrace of translanguaging and a willingness to acknowledge and build on students’ languacultural backgrounds. On the other hand, the book explores the effects of inconsistent, inefficient and sometimes nonsensical patterns in these responses. The book analyzes student outcomes and argues that, although some students are well-served by the program, tensions in the program lead to uneven, and even troubling, behavior and results, ranging from poor academic performance to dropping out. Finally, the book addresses ongoing evolutions and debates to the program and their potential to realize the program's aspirations.
