Von Ärzten, Pfarrern, Richtern gilt ähnliches in anderer Weise. Lehrpersonen sind in der Tat Experten des Lernens, der Kommunikation und der Verantwortung, Ärzte sind Experten des Heilens, Richter Experten der Gesetze. Aber moralische Übermenschen können sie nicht mehr sein, auch wenn die Qualität und der Charme des Buches "Some do care" von Colby & Damon (1992) auf den ersten Blick einleuchten. In diesem Buch werden solche moralischen Helden qualitativ untersucht und beschrieben. Wir aber möchten nicht Helden beschreiben, sondern ein pro fessionsmoralisches Verfahren darstellen, ein Verfahren, das für jede Berufs person, insbesondere für jeden Lehrer und jede Lehrerin, lernbar und an wendbar ist. Bei diesem Verfahren geht es darum, bei Verletzung des Ge rechtigkeitsgefühls der Kinder oder betroffener Erwachsener, bei Gefährdun gen der Intimität der Jugendlichen, bei vorauszusagenden negativen Konse quenzen von Handlungen etc. eine ganz bestimmte Form der Problemlösung einzuleiten, was einer Konstruktion von Moral in konkreten Situationen gleichkommt. Mit einem solchen Vorgehen wird implizite die Wirkung mo ralischer Helden in Frage gestellt. Heldenmoral und Weisheit sind dann nur mehr geschenkhafte Nebenprodukte des Gebrauchs solcher Verfahren. Übri gens, statt moralische Helden läßt sich auch der Begriff moralische Persön lichkeit verwenden.

Research on students’ media use outside of education is just slowly taking off. Influences of information and communication technologies (ICT) on human information processing are widely assumed and particularly effects of dis- and misinformation are a current threat to democracies. Morality in context is a timely topic. A debate between philosophers and social scientists is a good way to approach it. Why is there such a booming interest in morality and why does it focus on context? One starting point is the change in the sociostructural and sociocultural conditions of modern societies. This involves change in the empirical conditions of moral action and in the social demand on morality. As these changes are accounted for and analyzed in the social sciences, new perspectives emerge that give rise to new ways of framing issues and problems. These problems are best addressed by way of cooperation between philosophers and social scientists. As Habermas (1990) has pointed out in a much cited paper, philosophers depend on social science to fill in the data they require to answer the questions raised by philosophy in its "placeholder" function. The reverse also holds true: Social science needs the conceptual clarifications that philosophy can provide. With respect to morality, such mutual interchanges are of particular importance the contributions to this book show convincingly.

Currently, the school as an institution is faced with a number of controversial expectations on behalf of society and politics in view of its significance, effectivity, and instrumentality. Frequently applied tests and longitudinal studies should measure the performance level of our educational system constantly, but there is still an ongoing disagreement in terms of of the organisation of schools and curricula. This book opposes the monopolizing of the school, arguing that it is irrelevant or guided by particular interests and recent tendencies that solely and primarily define the significance of school by its effectivity. The Handbook of Moral Motivation offers a contemporary and comprehensive appraisal of the age-old question about motivation to do the good and to prevent the bad. From a research point of view, this question remains open even though we present here a rich collection of new ideas and data. Two sources helped the editors to frame the chapters: first they looked at an overwhelmingly fruitful research tradition on motivation in general (attribution theory, performance theory, self-determination theory, etc.) in relationship to morality. The second source refers to the tension between moral judgment (feelings, beliefs) and the real moral act in a twofold manner: (a) as a necessary duty, and, (b) as a social but not necessary bond.
